No, he's not Gibby, didn't really mean that as a comparison, more as perspective because in his 3 year Card career Carp's win %age is something like .750. That's INSANE (and "comparable" to Gibby)! It's like Pujols, you can't say he's in the class of Williams or DiMaggio YET (even though they're the only comparables), but there's no reason to believe he won't be able to keep up the pace (or even improve). THAT'S what I mean by Carp, there's no reason to believe he can't keep this up for a couple more years.

More of a joke, don't really think that's what we should do. I just don't want to see Albert in another uniform, and I wouldn't object to anything management would do to keep him in the birds on the bat... But no, I really don't think Albert would only take 10 per year.
But I don't think it's unreasonable for Albert to be a high producer until he's 42. Look at Bonds (ugh, hated writing that!), with today's conditioning there's no reason to believe a 15 yr commitment would be "the dumbest thing... ever"

My bad! That wasn't very clear. I was kinda half joking/half serious. If Albert would go for it, I'd do it - but I don't think he will. Like I said, he's going to be REAL good for a REAL long time.
No insults taken here, reading it again I can see why you said that.

I wanted to hit on a couple things that have been mentioned, but might get passed over a little.

First, I don't think anyone has said that extending Carpenter is a bad idea. The debate is really just about extending him now or next year. So, I don't know how anyone would think that we are somehow down on Carp because we don't necessarily want to extend him two years early. Everyone wants him to be a Cardinal.

Second, I don't know if this has caught on, but it sets the precedent for a 5 year contract from the Cardinals. Our well documented reluctance to pass out 5 year deals just died a quick death. Even though it's really just a 3 year extension, it's 5 years total, with an option year. We won't be able to enter negotiations with someone like Schmidt and say that we don't give 5-6 year contracts anymore. Not a big deal, since the market is demanding more 4 or 5 year deals, but still something that's worth noting.

Third, it doesn't affect the market value of pitchers at all. It's a 3 year extension at $16 million per. That's right in line with the market value of Cy Young caliber players. Someone like Jason Schmidt can still ask for $14 million a year and expect to get it from us.

Those are all kind of minor points, but they all affect the way we discuss this offseason and the way we negotiate with agents.

It also lets us explore options right now for starters without wondering if Chris might break the bank in a year or two.

I'm not saying it is a great deal or anything, but at least we know where we are at in case of a long-term deal for someone.
