Then again - you call this a fight? Well, by today's standards - but you oughta read up on the famous fight between the Cards and Reds in 1967. Now *that* was a fight. A real fight. Jack Buck called it the worst fight he'd ever seen on a ballfield. It started with Gibson and Tony Perez, and Gibby talks about it in his second autobiography.

Phillips stands by what he said

Brandon Phillips told reporters he stood by what he said.

“People (other than the Cardinals and their fans) respect me for what I said,” Phillips said. “Those were my comments, and a lot of people feel that way all throughout the league — many people feel that way. Regardless of what I say, we’ve got to go out there and take care of business.”

When a writer asked if Philllips was bothered by Tony LaRussa’s comments in response to Phillips’ shots about the Cardinals, the Reds All-Star shook his head no.

“To tell you the truth, I really don’t care what he said. I play for the Cincinnati
Reds; I don’t play for the Cardinals. . .I respect him for what he said, but we have to
go out there and beat the Cardinals regardless he said or what I said.”

He praised the Cardinals for their accomplishments.

“They’ve ‘been there, done that’ so many times that they’re really the team to
beat,” Phillips said.”We’re just trying to beat them. I feel like we have
the chance to do something special.”

He said he believes the Reds need to “show ‘em that we’re here.”

“We’ve got to tell them and show them and beat them,” Phillips said. “The
comments I said yesterday? Those were my comments…It’s time for us to show
them we’re here to stay, and here to win our division.”

“I know we’re a better team than them all-around. We’ve just
got to go out there and show them and the city and everybody all over baseball
that we are better than them — that’s what my comments were really all about.”

At the end of Tuesday’s pre-game interview, Phlllips asked a couple of reporters
exactly what LaRussa had said.

When they told him that LaRussa had said that Phillips comments might risk
alienating some of his teammates who were former Cardinals, Phillps scoffed, blowing air
through his lips in an exaggerated exhale, as though to say he didn’t believe there was any
such risk.

He then laughed.

“I said what I said. That’s all I can say. They can say what they want. I don’t give
(an expletive deleted) what they say.”

I assume Oquendo and Duncan share managing duties when TLR is gone; I heard the Reds announcers say Chris Speier is now managing the Reds. BTW, he's a former Cardinal.
