Re: Update: Possible 5/98.5 deal with Holliday?, p162

If Boston and both NY teams are out of the race (something I never envisioned when the offseason began), who are we competing against? Do we really need to offer nearly $20M/yr to get Holliday signed?

Not a great deal, but I can live with 5/98.5. I assume there's a NTC.

This twitter doesn't make sense to me.

I don't care how many years or for how much ... I'm basically at a BMW dealership right now ... I want I want I want I want I want.

maybe Goold is indicating this is a false rumor based on the dollar amount.

I hope we aren't roped into giving him almost $20 million a year for 5 years in this market, so the 5 year deal at that amount doesn't make sense.

6 years at that amount is less than what Bay got, so it doesn't make sense, either.

Please tell me we didn't give him $20 million a year when no one else was even freaking bidding.

from mlbtraderumors:
12:35pm: It's been suggested that the Cardinals have offered multiple contract scenarios to Holliday. One might have been seven years and $112MM, according to SI's Jon Heyman. Also, Heyman talked to one source who believes the Orioles are "laying in the weeds" despite recent denials.

That's a little higher than I thought he would end up, but shorter term.

I guess I can look at it this way: If it's truly a 5 year deal, then that's just 3 seasons where we have to pay both Holliday and Pujols ridiculous amounts of money... Pujols won't get a raise until '12; Holliday comes off the books in '15. Three years where two players would be making close to $50 million. That will make budgeting tight for those three years, but give us flexibility around those years to lock down the core.

Rotoworld's comments:
The Cardinals and Matt Holliday are closing in on a $98.5 million contract, according to FoxSports.com's Jim Bowden.

The contract would be a sign of acquiescence from Holliday and agent Scott Boras, who were seeking over $100 million when the offseason began. If the deal is for five years, it would be worth about $19 million a season. If it's for six years, it would be for around $16 million per season. Stay tuned. Jan. 4 - 1:34 pm et
Source: Jim Bowden on Twitter

At 5 years it'd be 19.7 per season. 16.41m per @ six years.

Edit -

That source is Boras.

I don't see why Holliday wouldn't want to go for a 7 year deal. At 35 years old he's not going to make bank. He'll prolly get 2/30 at best at that span in his career. Old outfielders just don't make a lot of money, and he's not going to hit like Manny Ramirez to merit a high dollar short term deal.

If the option is 5/98.5 or 7/120, you'd think the latter would make more sense for both sides.
