ESPN.com's Buster Olney has confirmed that the Cardinals are "close to a deal" with free agent outfielder Matt Holliday.
Former Nationals GM Jim Bowden, now working for Sirius XM and FOXSports.com, first had the news. The deal being discussed is reportedly worth around $98.5 million, though it's not clear if that amount is being stretched over five or six years. Olney suggests a seven-year contract might also have been discussed. Stay tuned as we sort it all out.

I hate when people say "this" but...this. It's wishful thinking to assume that no one else is interested and that we're stupid to be bidding against ourselves. Bay just got, what, $17 million+? So we're going to get Holliday for less than that, why? This market just dictated that Bay was worth $17 million. How much should Holliday get? How much would you have argued we should have offered him if we lose out on him?TheoSqua wrote:I think you have to make a respectful offer too. The Cards know Hollidays market value and if they attempt to go too far under it they could either lose Holliday completely, or he could get disgruntled.
I wouldn't be surprised if Holliday came into this offseason with expectations of getting a deal around 8/168. So he's probably already severely disappointed in how the market has transpired. I would hope the Cardinals are wise enough to see a good deal when it's available and jump on it without trying to do too much. If the Cards can sign Holliday for 7/120, they've gotten a great deal.

How [expletive] close to a deal can you get 7 or 8 times without signing someone?

again, no one is saying we should lowball him with a $14 million/year offer. We're saying we shouldn't be paying $20 million a year when we can get him for $17-18 million a year.
And if he's going to be a [expletive] because he's only making $17-18 million a year he can get lost.

I can't get over how silly it is that Bay determines Holliday's market, while outfielders who are at least as valuable as Bay sign for Brandon Lyon money.

If you're telling me that we can get him for $17-$18 million a year, I'd be an idiot to say we should give him $20. I just don't know how you would know that.clevername wrote:again, no one is saying we should lowball him with a $14 million/year offer. And I'm also considering that a couple million dollars a year savings will afford us what, a slightly better reserve player or middle reliever? I wouldn't let that come between signing Holliday or not, regardless of whether it appears to be a good deal or not. From where I'm at, not signing Holliday at this point couldn't possibly be considered a good deal for us, at least in the short term. I'll take may chances with him as a Cardinal, even if he is considered overpaid by some.
