Watched "Expelled," the Ben Stein documentary. Pretty good. I enjoyed it.

The intellectual dishonesty of making a movie in defense of intelligent design and then never really trying to defend it, instead trying to link evolutionary theory to the Holocaust and uncritically voicing the conspiracy theories of a handful of people who claimed to have been wronged because of their support of intelligent design (Claims which do not stand up to scrutiny). There's also the little matter that Stein is either too stupid or too dishonest to follow some very simple arguments made by evolutionists in the interviews.

I just had to note this.

Watched the Golden Compass, and it was okay. Great sets and costumes, and an interesting world. I didn't quite undertstand what the bad guys (the Magisterium) were hoping to accomplish with their plan, so that made the whole thing weird. Divinding people form their souls/animals somehow was going to make them accept the Magisterium without question, even though all the people currently in the Magisterium had their animals. But whatever. I suppose I ought to read the book.

Anyway, that's not my reason for posting. We get done watching, and I flip the TV back to the cable. The last channel I had on was the MLB network which at the moment is up in the 270s, near some religious channels. I flip away and pause arbitrarily on one of these - a Catholic centered channel, and there was some guy on there taking questions from callers. A former atheist of all things, and he specifically referred to "the Magisterium" in his answer. This is within three minutes of turning "Compass" off. I've never heard or recognized Magisterium in this context in my whole life, and I went to Catholic elementary school. My wife and I looked at each other with dinner plates. I started thinking this was some gag on the DVD and I accidentally flipped it back on. Really weird. Apparently this is an accepted term for the authority of the Catholic church, but I had no idea until I looked it up.

I just watched Be Kind, Rewind. It was clever and likable, but overall just kinda "there." Mos Def's character didn't have a lot to it other than being the straight man, and Jack Black was just like Wacky Jack Black always is. I think it also got a little repetitive in the middle with the "making the wacky home movie!" montages.

Watched "Its a Wonderful Life" for about the 10th time. probably the most I've watched a movie.
My little girl watched it with me which was a hoot. She had at least 100 questions.

Why are there no colors? - I had to explain they had colors in life, just not in the movies in he old days.

Why is that guy so mean? (Old man potter)

Is that house haunted?

is that man the devil? (old man potter)

Huh? A swimming pool under the dance floor? Why? Cool.

Why the spooky music? (she noticed every change in background music, something us older folks sort of tune out)

Why is George so sad?

Then the whole thing with Clarence making it so George could see how it was if he weren't born. that stuff just blew her away - she became obsessed with figuring it out.

Why's it called wonderful life? it seems like a worser-er life

Not kidding, a question a minute, lots of them deep, not easily dismissed. It drilled home how much kids take this stuff they watch to heart.

I thought it was right on par with any other mainstream documentary. While not all of the cases for the people wronged were strong, there were some that were quite damning. I'll agree the Holocaust bit was just flat stupid.
