Just heard from Wando grad Kep Brown- he will forego professional baseball for now and play college ball- 10th round pick of Cardinals.

Ryan Helsley has signed. He's a draft eligible sophomore from Northeastern State, which plays in the MIAA conference in DII.

Big kid, throws hard, but right now everything is pretty much hard. He struck out 95 in 63.67 IP, but gave up 10 HR. 7 of those HR's came in two starts, and the MIAA is a big time offensive environment. I don't know the park situations of those clubs, but it makes you think there is a reason for all the offense.

The average triple slash line in the MIAA is .306/.376/.470 which is basically Juco numbers.

There's a lot of swing-and-miss to his game. Struggles identifying breaking stuff. Justin Smith was a top-200 kid last year and he had similar issues with recognizing breaking pitches. He also went to Miami and ended up getting 38 at bats on the season. Miami has a recruiting coordinator/hitting coach Gino DiMare, and his main responsibility is recruiting.

Yes, you can go play Northwoods or Cape Cod, or Alaskan League summer baseball, but you're not seeing the same level of competition- or getting professional level of coaching- as you would at the minor league level.

I say this to bring up the point; if you're going to get a million out of HS, is it better to go to college, probably get much worse coaching, risk not having regular playing time, and slowing down your development up the ladder instead of going pro?

It's something to keep in mind for a lot of these types of players, who are going to an environment where winning games is the ultimate goal, instead of going into the minor leagues where the your development is the ultimate goal. Not to mention time value of money plays into things, as a million dollars now is worth something along the lines of $1.2 million. That means you would have to be drafted top-50 to even get into the slotting area to make up that money, and as a college Junior you generally aren't going way over slot amount.

Sounds like a decent amount of risk to me. One that I would need to consider all angles before making a decision.

Great point. The only reason to not sign is because you think you can increase your draft stock for the next time around. Like, if you're a late 2nd round pick and you're confident you can go to JuCo and be a top 10 pick next year. If your interest is being the best pro baseball player you can be, you should enter the pro ranks as soon as you're drafted. I'd say it's even more vital if you're a pitcher, because a college coach can wreck you.

The whole "my family values college" thing is weird. It's like, uh, you realize they are not closing all the colleges in the next few years, right? And college is probably SUPER fun as a 24 year-old with a half million bucks in the bank.
