He could still end up with an 8.00 ERA in St. Louis by the end of the season, but so far he looks good, good enough to get overly excited 2 IPs in.
I guess I'm just a bit more even keel than that.
I haven't really heard that Smoltz's stuff was in terrible shape even while in Boston. He's lost some velocity on his FB, but his secondary offerings still seemed fine. The only reason people were intimating that he was washed up to begin with was because of 40 bad IP worth of ERA coming off a surgery and 1 to 2 lost mph on his FB.
I guess my point is that the sort of over-reactions that are taking place in this thread are the exact type of reactions that played a role in us landing him to begin with...and while being excited is fine, it's a bit too early to be making suggestions like the BoSox are already regretting letting him go.
With all that said, I want to reiterate that I'm very excited to see him with the Cards, and (so far) doing very well. I thought he was a great pickup at the time and obviously nothing has happened to this point that's made me change my mind.
If the Red Sox had Wellemeyer or Boggs pitching for them every 5th day, they'd be regretting not having Smoltz in the rotation, I think.

Nothing against Duncan, he is good, and I remember him and LaRussa doing wonders in the dugout for the A's, but enough is enough. Go Padres.
Pretty tame so far over at SOSH.
Dave Duncan will still have a job when Zombies attack.

That flyball by Gonzalez was the only solid contact off Smoltz today so far

fwiw, and its not much because im going on what gameday shows me, smoltz seems to stick to game-plans and locates fairly well. if hes going to pitch low and inside to a batter, dont expect many to float back towards the middle.

Seeing where the military is seated during the Pujols HR reply, I'd mount an invasion on an empty lower section. There looks to be plenty of them.
