My grandmother absolutely loved these. Not sure why. I don't remember this place, but I do remember brain sandwich stands at South St. Louis neighborhood festivals when I was a kid.

Dieckmeyer's in South St. Louis is gone, but the memories remain.

My brother loves to eat weird [expletive], so much so that his son/my 5-year old nephew loves Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern because it reminds him of his (also bald) father.

He moved to St. Louis from the Netherlands a few years ago. One of the first things he asked about was the brain sandwiches in the city. He was here a few months and insisted that we had to go to Schottzie's in South County so he could eat a brain sandwich.

I've found that most people are either turned off by uncomfortable food textures (mushrooms and tomatoes are culprits) or uncomfortable flavors (onions). Personally, I've always been fine with textures. Not many textures have made me dislike food. The [expletive] brain sandwich has both a horrible texture AND a horrible flavor.

I'm not a squeamish eater at all but I can honestly say that the brain sandwich was the worst [expletive] thing I've ever had.

I don't believe I've had a brain sandwich but the brains and scrambled eggs I had were pretty funky.

The Sandwich Shop in old Collinsville. Small family-run diner. A predictable selection of sandwiches -french dip, burgers, BLT, Turkey club Reubens, but are done well. Had a Turkey Reuben - excellent. Would I cross the river just to go there? probably not...but would I take it over the host of chain restaurants near the boring CPA seminar meeting place, heck yes. Felt like home.

My latest Legend Club was way too spicy - just a ridiculous amount of sauce. I finished it, but barely.

Anyone been to Riverbend in Soulard? Cajun, creole, po'boys etc. I've heard really good things.

Went about a year ago. Don't recall what I had and haven't been back. Tells me something. Maybe it was red beans and rice and they were fine but certainly not fantastic. Or maybe something else.
