I don't think so. If he's not going to be effective as a starter I don't see why he'd be any use in the pen. His stuff is either going to come back or not. If it does there's no reason not to start him, and if it doesn't, he can no longer get MLB hitters out.fulldeck wrote:Could Mulder be used out of the pen?

I don't know. It is his original role, after all. And again- that's assuming that Looper is doing worse than the other three candidates. He very well might be pitching better than Wells, Reyes, or Wainwright, even if it is unlikely.G. Looper will be a serious team player if he's succeeding as a starter and agrees to be moved to the bullpen so that Mulder might reestablish himself.
Given Wells' contract, it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see him DFA'd if he goes belly up. I don't think it'll happen, but it is concievable.

I wasn't thinking in terms of Mulder not being able to get hitters out. I was thinking back to when the Cards used Morris out of the pen when he was coming back from surgery.G. Well, Mulder's deal has incentives for starts built in, not appearances. I don't see him wanting to take a bullpen role unless he's really sweet talked by Duncan and fully imbibes the kool aid.
But, of course, we're already paying a reliever 4.5M to start, so why wouldn't we pay a starter 5M to relieve?
