Is this true? Given the animosity or at least ambivalence many Cardinal fans feel toward McGwire, I'm not so sure...mcgee51taguchi99 wrote:So essentially this applies to no one who lives outside of San Fran?jimedmondsfan wrote:fans of BB will be furious
I agree with vance and russ. Give the guy his moment.vance wrote:I think should treat it just as they did Aaron. MLB can't stick its nose up now when their complicity with the problem created it.
Plus, I don't want to have to listen to the guy spend his retirement whining about how mlb disrespected him.

Also, please don't compare BB to Ruth, nobody compares to Ruth
Bonds has 301 more games played at his position...TODAY
From 1915 to 1919 Ruth went 87-45 with an average ERA of 2.28 (1.76 in his 24 win season) From 1919 to 1934 he averaged 45.87 HR's per year and 30.53 doubles
Really, there's Babe Ruth, and then there's "the field"

Why can't he celebrate?
He would be breaking the biggest record in sports. And like it or not, he hasn't been proven guilty. You can't disrespect the guy for breaking the record because there is speculation that he took steroids.
Bonds is one of the best hitters of all time. Top 5 in my book.
But he is a P.O.S. as a person from what I have seen in interviews and such.

MLB can and will celebrate/observe the record being broken. That's their job.
(of course, one can argue that MLB did not do its job with regards to steroids in the sport, but there were many parties responsible for that)
It's the job of fans/writers/historians to put it into context. MLB can't tell us how to feel about the player and his accomplishments. That's for history to decide.

I gaurantee that if he does beat the record, he will do it in San Francisco. There is no way he or the Giants would risk the Boos and Jeers of the fans in any other Ballpark (Can you imagine it happening in Philly or NY?).
Whether you like him or not (there are a lot of jerks that have played and are playing baseball), his accomplishment is offical and awe inspiring.
