Dexter Fowler Fills Glaring Hole for Cardinals

by Craig Edwards - December 9, 2016
Since the middle of 2009, the Cardinals’ left fielder has been Matt Holliday. Injuries kept Holliday from playing a full season each of the last two years. For that reason and perhaps others, the team decided not to exercise his $17 million option, instead paying a $1 million buyout. Similarly, the team opted not to give a qualifying offer to Brandon Moss, who hit 28 homers but also struck out 30% of the time, somewhat limiting his value offensively. As a result, the Cardinals entered the offseason with two starting outfielders, Randal Grichuk and Stephen Piscotty, and a hole. Following Ian Desmond‘s deal for $70 million with Colorado and the White Sox’ trade of Adam Eaton to Washington in return for major package of prospects, the Cardinals elected to fill that hole with Dexter Fowler on five-year contract worth $82.5 million.

Good article. pretty much agree. Though I will say, I think Carpenter has a chance to be more closer to 4-5 Win player if he plays a full season. People keep forgetting he missed over 30 games last year.

MLB made him a new one, but the fan submissions are better.

Reports were Fowler didnt want 2 play 4 Matheny, So those reports were false, or money talks, i guess.

OK, let's dive into this. It's worth exploring. Obviously, Fowler would not have agreed to play for a manager he wanted nothing to do with. But it would be silly to not acknowledge the fact that Fowler is about to experience a 180 degree shift in managerial styles. Joe Maddon and Mike Matheny are just different dudes. If I was Fowler, and I heard things about the Cardinals clubhouse/culture/manager from former Cardinals like Heyward and Lackey, I might have some questions. Apparently those questions were answered. And yes, money talks. I will say this: I found it interesting Matheny did not attend the dinner with Flores and Mo and Fowler after Fowler got into town. That looked a little odd, when you are looking at the optics of the situation. But we will see how it plays out. The Cardinals could use a breath of fresh air in the clubhouse. Mo has acknowledged this in a pretty blunt fashion. Fowler can be that guy.

I think Mo mentioned it in the presser.
