This weekend I enjoyed the epic "The Last of the Mohicans" again. Somewhat contrived, but still a great spectacle of a historical fiction movie. Lots of action. Great use of natural settings. Good musical score. Maqua character was one of the best bad-ass villians in the movies. Good acting all around. somewhere I read that this movie is one you need to see on the big screen for the scenery and music etc -I agree, but good on the small screen nonetheless.

Yeah, it is a bit formulaic of a movie. But IMO much better than others of that ilk - like "The Patriot" - never cared for it, or "Pearl Harbor" ridiculously stupid romance -in fact scratch Pearl Harbor -its not even a comparison. Mohicans is not as good as Braveheart - but in that territory IMO.

On the sort of obscure front - Alone in the Wilderness

documentary that sometimes makes the rounds on PBS. Collection of footage of Dick Proenneke who made a go of it alone in Alaska wild for many years. Rudimentary, nothing-exciting documentary - the guy was a simpler pragmatic survivalist who made it work. Its not like "Into the Wild" or "Grizzly Man" - movies I enjoyed, but in a different vein.

I got the Third Man and Band of Brothers on Blu Ray last weekend.

The Boxer? I enjoyed it years ago, have it cued up for a rewatch.

i thought "the boxer" was great.. obviously not his best.. but still well worth a watch..

in reference to "gangs of new york".. loved "bill the butcher".. didn't care too much
for the rest of it.. although i don't think it was complete crap like a lot of people..
cameron diaz really blew though..
