I always tip at least a buck (if not more) just in recognition of the effort to bag up the food/napkins/utensils/condiments and having it ready to go when I get there.

I've told this story before, but when I lived in Vegas I would occasionally see tip jars in gas stations. And I even got the stink eye one time when I didn't tip on my $3 worth of drinks and snacks that I put in all of the effort to gather. Kiss my ass, lady.

Surely you were just imagining things?
No. Vegas is different than anywhere else I've lived in that regard. People expect tips everywhere you go and living there you get pretty good at recognizing the signs when someone thinks they are entitled to one. I've been in sandwich shops before where there was a clear extended pause between handing you your change and handing you your food, and there is a dramatic difference in their demeanor depending on what you do during that pause. This gas station employee wasn't even subtle at all, sort of cleared her throat and looked directly down at the jar and then back at me. It's ridiculous to have a tip jar in a gas station in the first place, but her unprofessional attitude sealed it for me. Never went back to that store again. How much does she expect? Are people supposed to give some percent on the food they pick out and the gas they pump? I guess if everyone left the coins they got back it would definitely add up over a shift, but to think even that is in any way customary is unreal.
just catching up on this thread--as a former bartender/server--cash is preferable payable as i can lie about what im making
regarding coffee/sando shops...i typically will tip $1 and thats only because IVE WORKED IN THE INDUSTRY (cliche).
Although at times i do wonder if its more out of guilt though.
i.e. i frequent Jersey Mikes and there's a tip jar AND a tip line on the receipt so like it's almost implied i should tip. The dudes are cool as hell and they know but like its a sando shop, why should i tip?

damn. thats the kind of thing i only thought happened in movies. not counting when it'd happen when my college liquor store would sell to people with fakes.
Bartender rant: I gave a good ten minute mini whiskey education to a nice group at my scotch bar last night, which hurt my service for other guests. Oh well - it was fun, and the 20 something daughter batting her eyes at me helped. They learned a lot, had much better stuff than Johnny Walker black, and we all had a nice time. Their tab was low because they were having the half size taster portions. They tipped me 4 dollars on 76. If your bartender or server goes so far out of the way out of honest interest and kindness, that kind of tip is a real bummer. About twenty minutes later six doucher morons ordered a round of crappy beer and six fireballs and tipped me 20 bucks despite my 30 seconds of effort and clear disdain of their existence. People are weird.
Hey, first tipping rant in ages. I want to type these every shift.

You should bang the hot daughter and make sure dad finds out.
