Austerity, as the govt. spends $15 billion on the Olympics. Meanwhile, the [expletive] is really about to hit the fan in Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. Is this what's coming to the US?

I'd say it's a stretch to blame the London riots on austerity measures. The cops shot a young black man, and the rumor spiraled out of control that he was held down and shot in the back of the head. Rioting is to be expected.

Any chance that the European debt problems (didn't the EU Bank not guarantee Italy and Spains debt or something) had just as much to do with the crash yesterday as the downgrade to AA+ (as AD and Obama mentioned - the yield on treasuries shows it's still AAA)?

Either way, this, just like the end of 08/beginning of 09 is a speculators/day traders/whatever you call them wet dream

Yep, a lot of people would say it's the real reason. Just like had we not gone till the 11th hour to get our debt deal done the market would have been able to price or at least be prepared for Italy's issues, that caught investors by surprise Thursday. The downgrade was purely political and Standard and Poors pretty much said as much. No one really thinks the US won't pay their debts.

I think Monday was a [expletive] slap to S&P. You watch, at some point, S&P will be liquidated just like Bear Stearns which had alienated the other big boy banks with their handling of LTCM. S&P is a dead company walking.

With Fed taxes on investment income already ridiculously low, and fed interest at virtually zero (they already used the low interest /tax incentives during better/bubble making times). And with the brakes put on further stimulus dough, ... I was wondering what sort of juice was left to could give the stock markets. What is left after this?

Fed vows to keep interest rate low for at least 2 years

The fed is all out of options really. I don't mind if they keep rates low if lending rates stay low because I still have some expansion to do and want low interest loans.

Yay on low interest rates. We're relocating and we'll be buying a new house, as well as trying to sell our current home.
