Milwaukee's Best Light is probably the worst thing I have ever tasted.

I agree with that, and I can drink some pretty bad beer.

We went through 10 cases every Thursday night of "The Beast". Do you know what MBL's motto is? "Brewed For A Man's Taste". Seriously.

I used to think this about PBR. The thought first occurred to me a few years ago after a pretty regrettable hookup. I was walking home when people were out giving their dogs their morning walks. I had to vomit against a tree and it tasted like a combination of shame and the can all the night's PBR arrived in.

I don't taste the metal anymore.

Craft beers hit spot

They sell quirky beers with names such as "Buffalo Drool" and "Wheach," a peach-wheat combo. You won't see their commercials on television, because they do their marketing through fish fries and Facebook, e-mails and street festivals. Their staffers might wear kilts from time to time.

They are Missouri's craft brewers, independent makers of small-batch beers. In this recession, they are proving they have something more than quirkiness: Staying power.

Craft brewers across the St. Louis region say their business is proving surprisingly resilient as the economy slices into the hide of other industries. Times are difficult, but craft brewers are growing or holding steady.

Good beer, good food and strong connections to the local area are essential.

Picking a better [expletive] cheap beer out of a multitude of [expletive] cheap beers is like trying to pick the skinniest kid at fat camp. Most college kids are going to drink whatever is cheapest and most abundant. Whether or not those choices are better than Natty Bumpo is 100% a matter of subjective opinion.

I agree. During college, it was all the way to the left of the cooler at the stores where I bought beer. I never wandered past the Wiedemann's. At Southern, in the early 80s, it was Drummond Brothers. I think it was $1.99 a case.

Wow, hadn't heard the name Wiedemann's in years. We used to steal my beast friend's dad's beer from his garage fridge that was stuffed full of Wiedemanns and Stag, he kept us drunk through most of high school.

Their IPA is decent, imo, and their Harvest Ale is perfectly nice seasonal beer. 312 is what it is. Some of their higher end beers are quite good, like the Matilda and the Sofie. They also do a Bourbon County Stout which packs a punch. Not sure how available those are outside of Chicago but they're worth a try if you see them.

Yeah I like Goose Island, but I feel like a badass city like Chicago deserves a better local brewery.
