But you could also argue that Ludwick vs Jay/Winn is somewhat of a wash this year. Westbrook, however, could help a lot over who he's replacing.
That part of it, I'm fine with. It's the fact that they gave up 8 months of Ludwick for a nothing prospect. They should have been able to get more. I'm not unhappy with the team as it's constructed for the rest of the year.

With the way Pujols and Rasmus look right now, the Cardinals may not score enough runs for that rotation to matter in October.

Well really it was 8 months of Ludwick for a nothing prospect and westbrook. apparently either the indians really really hate everyone in the cards system or really wanted the guy they got from the Padres for westbrook.

I probably wouldn't argue with that but we were obviously in a pretty desperate spot with only a couple hours to go before the deadline.

Do you really think Pujols and Rasmus will be struggling like this for the next 2 months

Some of my (usually) like-minded colleagues are wondering why the Cardinals would seemingly give away Ryan Ludwick, whose line since 2008 is .271/.334/.460.

Meanwhile, Jay's line in 194 career Triple-A games is .295/.356/.424.

But Jay's getting better and Ludwick probably isn't.

Also, there's this: Jay is hitting .400 in the majors!

Well, .396 if you want be precise. If he gets a hit in his first at-bat tonight, he'll top .400.

Is he really this good? Of course not.

But he's hitting (almost) .400 in 48 games, and he's going to play regardless of Ryan Ludwick's presence. And Jay bats left-handed so he's going to play a lot. Should we really expect the Cardinals to look at Jay's pre-2010 stats -- he was solid in Triple-A this spring -- instead of what they've seen with their own eyes, so recently?

Jay has to play, and now the Cardinals just have to figure out whether or not to find him a platoon partner (a good thing, probably)....

....Meanwhile, Westbrook is what he is: a perfectly serviceable No. 4 or 5 starter. This season he's doing what he always does, and it's certainly possible that he'll move up a tick under Dave Duncan's tutelage (though Duncan's magic hasn't worked on Jeff Suppan).....

....I don't see any losers in this deal. But it's early.

At some point, it'd be fun to be the clear-cut winner in one of these deals.

I like Westbrook's attitude in this peice:
The Indians discussed the deal late into the night, partly because of Westbrook’s trade assignment bonus. The right-hander co-operated with the Indians when it came to the bonus, partly because he missed time with injuries.

“I didn’t really feel like I honored the contract as much as I would have liked to have,” Westbrook said.

Maroth was a good guy too. Just saying lol.

Here's hoping Maroth's the better man, and Westbrook is the better pitcher. A MUCH better pitcher.
