Goldstein joins the cadre of prospect folk who calls Taveras the best offensive prospect in the minors and put an 80 on his hit tool.

That's rarified air right there...

Who is Goldstein? 80? I don't know enough to say whether he is the best offensive prospect in the minors, but from what I've seen and read I wouldn't doubt it. But 80? Probably a bit of an over shot there.

Kevin Goldstein is the head prospect scout for Baseball Prospectus. He lives in the midwest, and personally scouts lots of games in the Midwest league, so he would have seen Taveras a bunch last year when he was in QC, and has probably seen him multiple times in Springfield as well.

I believe planet said on another thread that he agreed to do a Cardinals prospect Q&A with us here on GRB, so I'm sure there will be a bunch of Taveras related questions that are posed.

"head prospect scout" and "Baseball Prospectus" caused my head to explode. That sounds like he could be anywhere from a legitimate talent evaluater to a fat kid living in his parents basement spending 16 hours a day watching baseball and porn.

Goldstein is all the knowledge of someone from Baseball America(that's where he came from), with all the obnoxious arrogance you expect from Baseball Prospectus.

TT wins. That's pretty much the perfect way to sum up Goldstein.

Yeah, he wrote for BA for several years before moving to BP. He's definitely a scout-first perspective. And really, his work at BP or ESPN isn't bad when it comes to tone. It's when you see him in less formal media(twitter, his podcast) that he can be abrasive. It's confusing really, he comes off as annoyed by stupid questions, but then spends much of his time on twitter bantering with those people he thinks are asking stupid questions.
