It also had the reigning Cy Young winner and MVP. Depth matters less in the postseason.
I am aware that Carp and Pujols were on the team, yes. The point is that the starting rotation had a #1, a #4 (Suppan), and a lot of garbage.
It was not a great team. But some of this team's strengths, notably rotation and bullpen depth, will be irrelevant in the playoffs.

Statistics wise the 2006 team was better except for the records.. Better batting avg. 15 pts better.. Scored on avg 1 more run per game and they put the ball in play striking out much less of the time- basically 2 times less per game!! Doesn't seem like much of a difference but it is!!
Without dissecting your comments, how does the pitching compare?
The Pitching on this team is much better than the 2006 team that's why we are where we are!! But there was 1 starter on that team that Would be the Ace on this staff and that is Chris Carpenter!! And of course the Pujols then and Rolen and Edmunds would start on this team.. Encarnacion would have been hard to keep out of this lineup as well..without looking it up what year did Encarnacion get hit by that Aaron Miles foul ball in the on deck circle right in the left eye?? Put him out of Baseball and that was awful to see!! Was it 2007?

Carpenter's ERA+ with the Cardinals was 133. That's HOF territory and it would be below average on this staff. Encarnacion would be a no-brainer to keep out of the lineup behind Holliday, Grichuk, Heyward. I'd probably start Piscotty, Moss and Jay over him as well.
