I watched Real Genius again last night...that movie keeps getting better the more I watch it.

it's the gift that keeps on giving all year round Clark..

it's my wife's favorite movie.. right before "the 'burbs"

I've never seen that. I've never seen anybody drive their garbage down to the street and bang the hell out of it with a stick. I-I've never seen that.

I watched "Milk". It's a good movie, but I did have a few problems with it. First of all, like many biopics, I just felt that they tried to cover too many extraneous parts of his life. The relationships with James Franco and then his whacked out lover were poorly represented. The suicide just seemed like a throw-in. It really happened, but if you're going to put it in your movie, you should deal with it thoroughly. You never really got a feel for the chemistry or problems he was facing in either of the relationships. They were just there. Maybe it was just an excuse for Sean Penn to get to kiss James Franco.

Although I think Sean Penn did an admirable job, he really failed to capture the charisma of Harvey Milk. The real Harvey Milk was far more captivating than Sean Penn was playing him. What was the point of wasting 30 minutes of the film showing Milk running for city council 3 times and losing. To show the reason his boyfriend leaves him (even though we don't really know why they're together in the first place)?

And not that it matters because there is nothing wrong if Milk really was, but why did Penn give Harvey Milk effeminate mannerisms? Harvey Milk wasn't effeminate at all. He was charismatic, he was flamboyant, but he wasn't effeminate. Sean Penn could have just used his own natural voice and would have sounded more like the real Harvey Milk than trying to affect a deliberately gay mannerism.

What happened after Milk's death was also very significant, so I was disappointed that the film didn't cover that part of the story in much detail.

Josh Brolin, by the way, was great as Dan White.

If you've never seen the documentary, "The Times of Harvey Milk", I'd encourage you to watch it/rent it. You'll learn a great deal more about Harvey Milk (and Dan White, and San Francisco politics in the 1970s) and you'll save yourself 50 minutes to boot. It won the Oscar for best documentary way back when and in my opinion it stands head and shoulders above the Gus van Sant dramatization.

I finally got ahold of some Satyajit Ray films. I've watched Pather Panchali and Aparajito so far, and both were excellent. The former is a bit better than the latter, but both have me looking forward to more of his films.

Not sure if you guys have access to this via your library - interlibrary loan. in St. Louis county you can borrow from across the country. I figure most libraries are connected to it. I've used it about 6 times to get off the beaten path books and movies like this and think I found the trilogy you refer here:


Again, I don't know how your library is set up - I access the database link via my local library's webpage and enter my library card # and search. The database webpage is not the most user-friendly - I'm always unsure if my request was made - but every time, within a couple weeks my library calls and lets me know the item is in. I just put in a request for "Johnny Got His Gun"

Yeah, my library's hooked up to some network which encompasses some downstate Illinois libraries (as far as Quincy Notre Dame HS and Quincy Public Library) but no Satyijit Ray. In fact, my library seems to be the most diverse when it comes to carrying the stuff I like so I've never used the inter-library loan, but I'll have to keep it in mind.
