It's pretty simple. The Cardinals' offer would have made him the fourth highest paid 1B in the game. The Angels' offer makes him the highest paid. Whether or not you equate money with respect in the abstract, almost everyone does when it comes to their paycheck.

@TortyCraig: Thanks for 11 yrs of memories, Albert. We'll miss you. Good luck in the AL. (You & I both know STL sprinkle doughnuts are better than LA's.)
You're a real prick albert.

Wow. I was not expecting this, and obviously haven't checked the headlines until now. But congrats to Albert. We'll miss you.
It's the end of an era in St. Louis. What a great run it was with the game's best player and two championships. But it had to end sometime. No hard feelings here, just some sadness in realizing that it has come to a close.
I still think this club has a very bright future. It is a well-run organization. DeWitt is a smart owner in that he won't mortgage the future only to force a fire sale later on (remember the Blues under Laurie?). The minor league system is pretty well stocked, at least in some key positions.

If it happens on the West Coast, ESPN will rarely acknowledge it. Therefore, will it have ever really occurred?

They acknowledged Bonds, and he was playing on the West Coast.

Are you referring to his HR record, or his legal troubles?

He is not a Cardinal any more. He doesn't deserve to go in as one.

I'm not sure I trust a bunch of journalism majors, or people leaking info to journalism majors, to correctly compute something like the relative tax difference in proposed contract offers.

The home run milestones. They were breaking into Baseball Tonight and SportCenter to show his at bats while he was chasing those.
