jim...good point about using the Edmonds "savings" to send to a team (with possibly more cash) in trading Rolen. That's something I hadn't thought about.

And maybe it's just me, but I'd prefer Allen Craig to be the heir at 3B over Freese...at least in terms of guys currently in the system.

For the sake of reference, I believe Nick Stavinoha was a 5th year senior drafted in the 7th round in 2005, although one difference between him and Freese is that Stavinoha was also drafted in 2002. Of course it probably didn't help Freese that he was in the Cardinals' backyard in 2004.

I spent some time pointing and clicking at B-R, and I couldn't find a decent major league position player (at least 2000 plate appearances) who hadn't made AA by his age-24 season. He'll have to catch the last train in, if he's going to be close to an average 3b.

One other thing worth mentioning: Ankiel will be a free agent after the 2009 season.

Freese hit .302/.400/.489 as a 24-year-old at Single-A Lake Elsinore last season. He should have spent most of the year in Double-A, but that's where Chase Headley was. Freese's numbers were inflated by playing in the California League and he's no better than average defensively, but he should turn into a useful role player, if not a regular. The Cardinals should feel comfortable having him open 2008 in Triple-A.

again, though, it should be noted he was blocked in AA by a better 3B prospect in Headley. It sounds like he would have spent his 24 yo season in AA if Headley wasn't there.
