The problem is, the people that believe this crap aren't intellectually curious enough to seek out anything that might disagree with their views.

or listen to your reasoned arguments when you try to discuss it with them. Believe me, I know. I'm done banging my head against the wall with my brother and dad on the subject (well, not necessarily the antichrist one since they haven't bought into it yet, but the Muslim stuff).

They believe the things they are fed that they want to believe and there's not much you can do to change that.

I was at a redneck bachelor party Saturday night for my old boss, who is still a good friend. He and his d-bag buddy were talking about the speech in Berlin. He goes:

"Who was the last charismatic...great speaker to lecture a big crowd in Germany."

His drunk buddy chuckled and goes "exactly." Then I chimed in and answered with Ronald Reagan. So he swung around and said "Ryan, keep your goddamn mouth shut or I'm going to put you in the corner and make you listen to Hannity." It was a good time.

Anyways, I was watching Maverick's speech at Sturgis again, mostly because I enjoy watching stand-up comedy. I have little doubt that if Barack Obama gave a speech where he came across as an old man out of the nursing home chasing butterflies and rambling incoherently, the media would swarm over that and start running headlines like "Obama: Unhinged?" It either speaks poorly of Maverick's speaking abilities that a trainwreck like that wasn't covered to the extent of Howard Dean's scream 4.5 years ago...OR (and this is just me being crazy) the same media that has helped cultivate a BS image has once again failed to scrutinize Maverick.

As far as McCain's ad, I think he's completely within his rights to bring up the "messiah" angle. Creepy Ralph Reed associations aside, it's a valid criticism. I like Obama, but as I've mentioned before I'm not comfortable with him indulging the savior angle. I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but if I see something again I'll post it. There's been several things he said where I actually winced. He has to take advantage of his popularity, but it's a fine line.

I think that's more the realm of the media and Jon Stewart, though. And Obama should be called out on that if he pushes it too far, but by the media (who, ironically, are already doing that some while at the same time being the root of a lot of the messiah thinking).

I don't feel comfortable with one guy who thinks he's our saviour but doesn't say it calling out another guy who thinks he's our saviour and hints at it. And given the religious base the Republicans go after it makes it all the more uncomfortable.

Not just the Unhinged... but how about offering up his wife to compete for Miss Buffalo Chip, a clothing-optional beauty pageant?

Exactly. For McCain, that's just a perverted old man having fun.

meh, it just showed that he didn't really know anything about the event.

should his staff have vetted him better on what the event was (or kept him away from a frickin' biker rally to begin with)? Sure, but I don't think that was an old man moment.

After all of the crap that we've put up with when it comes to George W. Bush, why the hell does Obama still only lead by a couple of points?

Is anyone aware that they're not polling new voters, either?

Hahahaha.

I just read that Dick Cheney is speaking at the GOP convention.

Awesome. Republicans are trying to distance themselves from this administration yet the most unholy of all vice presidents is going to deliver a speech. I'm going to be listening carefully for any hints that he's thanking Lucifer. Or Karl Rove. One and the same.

Clevername, I just think any "beauty pageant" being held at a biker rally is going to be pretty skanky. Just figured he would probably know that, too.
