I'm not sure about "fire", but the Mets looked like the more "confident" team out there in that series. They knew they would make the plays, get the hits, make the pitches, win the games. The Cards on the other hand generally looked skittish in the field, the pitchers looked flustered on the mound, and the hitters sometimes weren't taking confident swings.

But do you really believe that the Cards took poor swings because of lack of confidence? And not because good pitching had them off-balance? Not because they got fooled?

Go ahead and tell me again that "these are men, not machines." Apparently the team that is the best put-together psychologically will just barely edge out the team who "wants it" the most. Talent and execution? Nah, those are for machines.

Do I believe that confidence at the plate affects how you swing the bat? How you attack certain pitches instead of tenatively swinging at offspeed stuff? Yes.

Do I believe it makes a *huge* difference? As in, anybody can hit the ball if they have a ton of confidence? Absolutely not.

Do I think that if Tony just told them to believe in themselves, they would all of the sudden win? No.

It's just something that's going to have to come to them via a win or two. Even a good rally where they--I don't know--score more than one freaking run would help.

Call it whatever you want guys. But when the Cards are in 30th out of 30 teams in hitting% and 26th place fielding% and 27th worst team pitching ERA there is a lack of something going on.

I'll call it small sample size and wait for, oh, maybe a month or so before looking at how the Cardinals rank in hitting, pitching, and defense...

the team looked like crap, blame it on whatever you want, or nothing at all. Hopefully they turn it around a little bit in Houston.

I don't know..some of the looks on the Cardinal's players faces shown by ESPN prior to the final two outs of the game Wednesday night showed signs of guys pissed off and perhaps even embarrassed..

The Cardinals under La Russa don't normally show a lot of ups and downs with emotions during regular season games anyway..

We just got pushed around by a better ballclub...

I'm going to predict that we get a bunch of these "no fire" threads over the course of the season. It's been ten years since we've seen a Cardinal offense as bad as this one likely will be.
