If we do become sellers, I can see a good market for Izzy, Kip Wells, and Looper, assuming the latter two are able to pitch reasonably well (league average or better). It is amazing what a slightly above average starter can yield in a trade to a team in a pennant race (Kazmir comes to mind).
Remember that Izzy is a FA, and likely won't be back in 2008. He could have a ton of value for a team like the Tribe, whose closer is Borowski.
Wells is also a FA. If he's healthy, he will have valule.
If Looper holds up as a decent starter, then it would have to be a really sweet deal to let him go, given that he is signed for next year for $5M (roughly).
I wouldn't trade Reyes, AW, Duncan, or Molina.
The problem with trading Eck or Kennedy is that 1) they probably will have limited value 2) we really don't have minor leaguers to replace them, unless John Nelson and Edgar Gonzalez (hands of stone) float your boat.
I really wouldn't mind liquidating the aforementioned guys if we are out of it. I'd rather see us suck completely if it means retooling faster with young players who have considerable upside. The Blues are doing it right now, and have turned the ship completely around in 1.5 years. I don't see why the Cards can't do the same.

Good post, Jack. You know, I love Isringhausen and what he has given the Cardinals, but if they can improve themselves by trading him off and saving money by getting rid of that contract, it would probably be the best thing he could ever do for the team.
Timmy, I like your list and it's all pretty accurate. A lot of people might not like the idea of the Cardinals basically re-shaping the roster and bringing in younger guys and shedding payroll so that they could open their wallets a bit next year, but I think they should. They got the championship with this group, and it's time to go in a new direction like they did after 1999.

Oh boy. Molina will be arbitration-eligible after this year. He'll be getting more expensive than the Gary Bennetts of the world and it's not at all obvious that Molina can maintain his defensive advantage over those guys. Furthermore if Bryan Anderson continues to develop, it's possible that by next year he'll be a better all-around catcher than Molina. The only problem with trading Molina is that it's kinda hard seeing anyone else wanting him that badly.indyredbird wrote:Molina I believe is a keeper as well

Define 'absolutely' have to. We wouldn't have a team of 34+ year olds aging like a bad wine if we had gone Florida Marlins some years. I know we haven't really been sellers in a decade, but sometimes I think we hold on to players a lil too long. Had you not known we would win a World Series last season, would you have traded Suppan or Reyes or Marquis? I'm sure one of the three could have fetched a decent package of Minor League players, and if it was Suppan we still could have made a run at him in the offseason.GatewaySnayke wrote:My stance is that you don't deal superstars unless you absolutely have to. Dealing guys like Juancion, Eckstein, Looper or even izzy (as I mentioned in the PGT) and taking whatever you can get is far better.
But as last year proved, all you need is a hot team in October to win a WS. So unless you are a definite seller I guess there is no reason to trade away any players.

Rolen certainly wouldn't be an untouchable to me, and he's probably my favorite player on the team.
The problem isn't his NTC. Guys are dealt all the time that have them. (Well, not all the time, but it's not as hard to get around them. i.e. $$$$$)
The problem is that he's far more valuable to the Cards than his worth would be to another team.
If the Cards want to be sellers, I'm all for it. However, if you really want to sell, you have to consider selling Rolen. Otherwise, it's just going to be more of the same.
On the ML roster, Pujols and Carp are the only ones that I consider untouchable. Nobody in the minors is untouchable.
