Re: Time to get Oswalt
Oswalt hasn't pitched for seven months and is at least a month from getting on the mound for the Cardinals. But if his WAR was OK last season, let's do it! That 0.6 wins, or whatever [expletive] value is taken as gospel, could make the difference.

Reasonable thought. But he also had a better K:BB ratio, and adjusted ERAPopeye_Card wrote:WAR for pitchers is nearly useless, no matter where you get it from.Magneto2.0 wrote:Last two seasons Oswalt had a better WAR (Even considering he pitched nearly 60 less innings than Garcia in 2011), better K:BB ratio, and better adjusted ERA.Popeye_Card wrote:We're sitting here talking about needing to run out and get Oswalt for insurance for *our* rotation--2nd in the NL. Really?Magneto2.0 wrote: Ummm I would have. Oswalt is definitely better than Garcia.
Sure, 10 years ago. But 34 year old, bad back Oswalt vs. 25 year old, entering his prime Garcia?
I trust Baseball Reference's WAR more than Fangraph's.

There's the more major point that at 25, Garcia should be progressing towards his peak years. Oswalt at 34 and with a bad back is probably going to be trending down.
For S's and G's, ZiPS ROS:
Garcia 3.60 ERA, 3.19 FIP, 6.96 K/9, 2.70 BB/9, 2.58 K:BB
Oswalt 3.68 ERA, 3.59 FIP, 6.66 K/9, 2.28 BB/9, 2.92 K:BB
Virtual dead heat.

Relatively minor points. Oswalt bested Garcia in ERA+ by 2 points in 2010, and 1 point in 2011. Their K:BB ratio's crossed paths last season, with Garcia's getting better and Oswalt's getting worse.Magneto2.0 wrote: Reasonable thought. But he also had a better K:BB ratio, and adjusted ERA

Re: Time to get Oswalt
True but I'm speaking just for one season. Now if the option is Garcia and Oswalt for the next few seasons, then it's not even a question. Definitely Garcia. I just think Garcia has looked really bad this year. And I'm a huge fan of his upside/potential, and what he already has shown his first two full seasons. But something is just off right now.Popeye_Card wrote:Relatively minor points. Oswalt bested Garcia in ERA+ by 2 points in 2010, and 1 point in 2011. But then when I think about it, even if the Cardinals do eventually sign Oswalt, he'd much more likely be replacing Westbrook than Garcia in the rotation.

I think we need to explore the trade market and use some of our minor league depth to pull off a blockbuster.

Re: Time to get Oswalt
Gracias problem isn't command or velocity or movement or anything that can be adjusted. His problem is that his delivery is simply unrepeatable over the longhaul without severely tearing his shoulder and elbow up. It's likely were already seeing the effects of it and it'll only get worse. In short, trade Garcia before he becomes rich hill for 10 nil a year or whatever.

I'm more concerned about finding a couple of bullpen arms than I am adding Oswalt who wouldn't help for 4-6 weeks anyway.

Convince Ruben Amaro that he needs to clear up payroll space to make a run at Josh Hamilton, then trade Garcia for Halladay!
