Oswalt hasn't pitched for seven months and is at least a month from getting on the mound for the Cardinals. But if his WAR was OK last season, let's do it! That 0.6 wins, or whatever [expletive] value is taken as gospel, could make the difference.

We're sitting here talking about needing to run out and get Oswalt for insurance for *our* rotation--2nd in the NL. Demand is high for pitching throughout the league, and it will only get greater as the deadline rolls around.

Last two seasons Oswalt had a better WAR (Even considering he pitched nearly 60 less innings than Garcia in 2011), better K:BB ratio, and better adjusted ERA.

I trust Baseball Reference's WAR more than Fangraph's.

Relatively minor points. Oswalt bested Garcia in ERA+ by 2 points in 2010, and 1 point in 2011. Their K:BB ratio's crossed paths last season, with Garcia's getting better and Oswalt's getting worse.

There's the more major point that at 25, Garcia should be progressing towards his peak years. Oswalt at 34 and with a bad back is probably going to be trending down.

True but I'm speaking just for one season. Now if the option is Garcia and Oswalt for the next few seasons, then it's not even a question. Definitely Garcia. I just think Garcia has looked really bad this year. And I'm a huge fan of his upside/potential, and what he already has shown his first two full seasons. But something is just off right now.


But then when I think about it, even if the Cardinals do eventually sign Oswalt, he'd much more likely be replacing Westbrook than Garcia in the rotation.
