Gas prices are about the 93,281st most important reason not to live in Illinois. And really hats off to the Huskies now that you mention that, how in the hell do you recruit kids?

"Young gifted athlete we would like you to come to *northern* Illinois to see our campus. And oh by the way, we aren't close to Chicago. Ok great, we can pencil you in right after you visit Coral Gables.".

I think what NIU does is picks through the leftovers and finds the jewels. They take advantage of the fact today that scouting is different. These kids today are more recruited on raw numbers - 40 speed, height/weight, 3 cone drill time etc... Really you get a kid that is tough and smart and has a good head on his shoulder but does the cone drill in 10.5, he's likely to be a better player than the [expletive] up that does it in 10.4. Case in point is a kid that lived down the street that played with my son - he got no real scholarship offers. The head coach was a starter on the 80's bowl team and still connected to the school, recommended him, and the kid racked up 239 tackles in his career there and is now on the Falcons practice squad. Good kid, hard worker, maybe a bit undersized and slow compared to the elite LB recruits of his class, but a hell of a player.

We are close to Chicago, jim - you know that!

One thing they do sell to the kids is - "you can come here and play right away" as opposed to "maybe one day you'll get in a game for [insert big school here]". And with the more recent success kids are starting to say "why not go there?".

The Village Commons Bookstore is selling them. They are a client of mine, so if they are sold out or something, shoot me a pm and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks, I'll definitely stop in there next time I'm in DeKalb.
