Re: Brunch
I love breakfast food. We usually have it once a week for dinner.

Re: Brunch
We took a large group for a post 5K brunch at Schlaflys. Place was not busy yet, but the waiter wasnt happy to see us at all. We had kids with, but we were low maint and behaved. Still, the guy seemed pissed we decided to come there. I think the sunday workers tend be hungover.

i don't care what you call it/what time of the day it is...but if you have eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, pancakes, french toast, whatever...i'm in and happy.

Re: Brunch
This rant is not about breakfast food at night, which is awesome. This rant is brought to you by the gentrifying trendsetters of Chicago and their bizarre compulsion to make "brunch" a verb.

I think this should be in your advertizing materials. "Come in and do brunch, you gentrifying trendsetting mother [expletive]".33anda3rd wrote:This rant is not about breakfast food at night, which is awesome. At $12/head you have to run a ridiculous margin. Close the [expletive] place and make some money at night. Not a tightrope I'd want to walk that ruins every weekend, right on the heels of important, stressful services.

That would restore some order to the universe.stlouie_lipp wrote:I don't like brunch either, but I want to know just how small the group of acceptable restaurant patrons is in 33's world. Must be narrowed down to about 137 people.

Re: Brunch
I can see how brunch is a pain in the arse for a late night restaurant/bar workers and staff - but as a patron I enjoy the hell out of it. I like how it can either be at a nice restaurant, or the divy bar next door or IHOP- we just go where the wind blows us. I wouldn't consider myself a crowd type people-lover, but think the fellow brunch-goers are diverse-Families, post-church peeps, young couples, the hungover. It's good fun.33anda3rd wrote:Do you want a meal where you can pretend to be hip and urbane even though you're wearing dirty shower shoes, cargo shorts and a backwards ballcap declaring which Big Ten School you went to?
Are you unable to get up before 11am on Sunday but want the option of breakfast but don't want to go to a dedicated diner/breakfast place?
Couldn't you just DIE for a meal served by the restaurant's C Team that is composed partially of stuff that's leftover from weekend dinner service and is going to be stale come Tuesday? Where, because it's the C Team and they're not the A Team it's ok to tip poorly and bark orders?
Wouldn't it be divine if there were a meal where the beverage menu was centered around a flavorless neutral spirit and tomato juice, even when tomatoes are way out of season? And if you could, once a month, either because you have no short-term memory or are given to hyperbole, could declare "OMG thissuz likka bess bloody EVER!!!!!!"
Can't you really go for a pile of C- pancakes smothered in chocolately, sugary crap? Just like a pure carb-and-sugar failure pile?
What if there were a meal in which service ends at 3 and the restaurant closes until dinner later in the day, but you could feel obligated to sit around and occupy space between those services, oblivious to the hate being directed toward your UGG boots by the whole staff?
Wouldn't it be the best thing in the world if we could collectively decide which place for this meal is the hottest so we can all stand outside waiting for a table even in February? So that like everyone could see us there? And we could give it bonus Heat Points if it's in a transitional neighborhood so we can feel like trailblazers instead of gentrifiers?
“I don’t know how many, like, white people having brunch I can deal with on a Saturday afternoon.”--Julian Casablancas, on leaving NYC.
your description of your brunch crowd - It ratifies my negative stereotype of Chicago. Segregated by income class. So bad that they take the fun out of brunch.
