It would make sure that we don't have two games every year where teams can field nine-man benches. People like to complain about 40-man rosters in September; this is worse because of the winner-take-all nature of this game.
9 man benches in a winner-take-all game are bad because _____
...because baseball should ideally be played like baseball, and baseball for the rest of the year isn't a game where you can carry a nine-man bench.
The primary complaint with a 1 game playoff is that it isn't baseball and doesn't reflect a team's true quality. If a team is able to use their depth to their advantage(an important thing in a 162 game season) in a wild card game, then it's actually *more* like baseball than forcing more of the randomness of playing one game completely straight up.
EDIT: Maybe more to the point, this isn't some drastically different roster. If the Cubs win, the only obvious change that will be made is Denorfia will be dropped for Hammel, there may not be any other adjustments. If there are it'll be dropping a bench player for a reliever, not exactly tipping the scales from 'true baseball' to a sideshow.

I'm getting nervous too, and the Cards aren't involved!

But then you would be penalizing the division winners since that would increase the layoff between the end of the season and the start of the DS.

Not if you do away with the insane amount of off days. The season ended sunday, the WCG is wednesday, the first NLDS game is Friday. Could pretty easily fit a double header in Tuesday with Game 3 if necessary on Wednesday. Of course this would cause overlapping playoff games which MLB is apparently scared [expletive] [expletive] of doing.

Which is stupid when most fans only care about their team anyway. They wouldn't be losing much viewership, if at all. And for the biggest fans of the sport, crazy things happening simultaneously is [expletive] awesome. See game 162 of 2011 season.

Yup...I was assuming without any modifications to the current schedule. Or you could have the wild card games on Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday (assuming there is no need to determine a divisional winner if there is a tie). That way, no doubleheader necessary. I'm not sure how receptive MLB would be to a doubleheader for a postseason game. (?)
Or you can start the playoffs on Tuesday like you said...and have overlapping playoff games.
