I've owned 3 Nissans. They all needed a new transmission around 100k miles.

- 2004 Maxima
- 2008 Murano
- 2008 Maxima

I think you can expect to replace the transmission, at the Minima.

We have a 2011 Maxima with 240k in the driveway, CVT just started slipping - didn't do anything special while owning (since new). Outlier, for sure. Speaking of, anyone want to buy it?

I wonder if that's the difference between my Nissan/Infiniti experience and you and Bulldog's. Looks like mine were a 4 speed auto, three 7 speed autos, and a 5 speed manual, no CVT.

Seems like Covid prices have normalized a bit. Where do you suggest looking for listings? I still like craigslist because I can sort by clean title (fwiw, plenty of liars) and other criteria. Deals seem best on Facebook, but people also seem generally clueless there when I ask questions. I also hate installing Messenger just to shop. Don’t use FB at all otherwise. OfferUp seems like the salvaged title yard. It’s probably all three. I’m certainly not going to a dealer in the price range I’m looking at.

Auto Auctions or bust

Tell me about this. I looked into it. From what I can tell, anything that isn’t dealer only around here is pretty scammy or at least hard to understand. Also mostly salvage stuff.

Auctions are only good to go to if you don't really need a car but you want to check some out and maybe get lucky on a deal that no one notices. A lot of the cars are not worth it but some are repossessions, etc and perfectly fine vehicles. You have to see what is in your area.

I probably need to talk to people who know about it here. The auctions that actually list online are confusing and vaguely scammy feeling. But I wouldn’t be surprised to learn the better auctions don’t post listings.

I got a sweet BMX Mongoose (pre Chinese garbage at Walmart Mongoose) when I was 9 at a police auction. I think largely because my dad got swept up in the game of it.

It had nut mufflers on the top bar and the handlebars. It never, ever had a helmet. Most critically, it had my brother’s jealousy which may make it the most satisfying ride I’ve ever had.

Me riding it was exactly like Regular Sized Rudy.

It just occurred to me that if you are trying to sell a ridiculous big ass truck in a modern world where electric vehicles are for libtards, you might want to behave exactly like Elon.

So my son's 2012 Ford Escape bit it finally. Transmission. I bought him a used Civic, but the Escape is just sitting there now.

Anyone know someone in central MO who would be willing to buy it to fix it up or part it out? It has about 175,000 miles on it and some minor body damage we didn't mess with fixing. But it has newer tires, brakes, plugs and stuff. With a new/rebuilt transmission it might go another 50,000 miles.

If not, I'm looking at a few "we buy cars for cash" places in town. How much would be a fair price to hold out for from one of these places?

There are a lot of places that will make an offer for a vehicle; if you can find one that will do an offer you could try that out to get a baseline on value. You don't have to accept any offer you don't like of course.
