Shane Bieber isn't going to cost as much as people think.
I think you are right, and unfortunately I think you'll get what you pay for. His strikeout rate is falling off a cliff. Which makes him a classic Cardinals move.
I think Bieber is a good not great pitcher. I'd still be excited to get him, as long as we're not giving up too much
If they're asking for Winn, Hence, etc...then just move your target to someone else like Logan Gilbert or Luzardo
Why is Montgomery on the block? If the team is really wanting to contend while Goldy and 'Nado are here then they should be acquiring quality starters not shipping them off. I get the desire to move Flaherty but I'm not sure that makes any sense either. IMO they should use this trade deadline as a way to build for '24.
Nola (offseason splash)
Monty (give him Waino's $18M over 5 years)
Lynn (TDL and pick up '24 option)
Mikolas
Flaherty
Matz
That's a pretty decent looking rotation.
Otherwise just blow it up and build around the Walker/Gorman/Noot core.
Because Montgomery might want more than what the Cardinals are willing to pay if he hits FA.
He likely can get $20-$25 mil. annually on the open market for 4-5 years. He's likely worth that investment, but not sure if the Cardinals will pull the trigger on that.
As a free agent that should command a decent return, it would be reckless not to trade him. Montgomery can still be signed even if we trade him.

Yep, they can always resign Monty if they want to. Yankees did the same thing with Chapman. Traded him to the Cubs in 2016, and just resigned him in the off season.
Aside from the Craig-Lackey trade, I cannot recall a time when they acquired an established starter with more than 1 season under team control for another roster player.
Arozarena-Liberatore and TON-Gonzales are instances I can think of where they swapped prospects, but nothing else.

Montgomery's situation might be a bit different in that he was already caught off guard by the trade to St. Louis.
His wife was about to start her medical residency in the NE when he was traded, I believe.
Yeah, he may not want to return to St. Louis which is definitely possible, which in that case, you still get the prospects back in a trade. So it's still a win.

Right, we're agreeing here. A guy like Gilbert doesn't get traded often and is extremely valuable which is what makes me nervous. If you trade Lynn for Burleson and he wins a batting title so be it, but the 3-4 young guys who could maybe get it done for Gilbert all have tons of upside. You're also not going to get an established starter for a rental starter. Monty doesn't have that much surplus value and a team with an extra pitcher doesn't need to trade for a pitcher.
2017 was still the funniest year. Didn't do diddly at the deadline, kept Lynn in a year where Francisco Liriano brought back Teoscar Hernandez, then traded for Juan Nicasio only when he was postseason ineligible, and of course, missed the postseason.

I'm following now.
Aside from Winn (which I think would be a big mistake) and Herrera (could be a mistake in trading him, but one that I'd be OK with if they got an upgrade of Knizer), there's not really many prospects that have much value currently aside from maybe Hence, who I wouldn't trade.
Trading Donovan to get an established starter with Herrera or Winn would be interesting -I'd prefer to keep Edman.
Trade Montgomery and Flaherty for prospects as well.

Speaking of mediocre Cardinals teams from the late 2010s, it's somewhat disappointing that the rookie starting pitchers that debuted in 2018 around the time Matheny was fired, only Flaherty amounted to anything while Hudson, Ponce de Leon, Reyes, Gomber, and Mayers turned out to be nothing.
