Admittedly, I'm biased because I'm a commie pinko and whatnot... I thought it was definitely a home run. But I've seen/heard a lot of people say that they were unimpressed by it. I've been surprised by that.
If the idea was to win over moderates, I think he did an excellent job.

People have been praising Palin's speech, but I think it only served to rally the base, and did nothing to win over any moderates.

I did not see Biden's or McCain's speeches to comment on them.
McCain's the moderate. Palin is the right-winger to ease the concerns of the base. As if she'll have power or something.
I know she doesn't have power coming in, but I couldn't help but to be reminded when McCain very slowly moved around the stage hugging her and her family afterwards that it's not a sure thing that McCain makes it through 4 years of being president.

McCain being president and Palin being VP doesn't bother me, though it's not my preference. Palin being president scares me, and even moreso after that speech.

Not in the way he tried to make people believe it on the interview, although he backed down from that when Stephanopoulos corrected him a couple of times.
Here's that bit of the interview. I don't see what he flubbed up or tried to make people believe that wasn't true.

I guess he slipped by creating the possibility of making a misleading sound bite through aggressive cutting. Such as:

Anyway, I don't see the point in discussing the details of how a candidate responded to an interview question on this pointless topic. What possible difference does it make?

Well, he went on try to and snuff out the McCain campaign for saying he was a Muslim. He had to backtrack when told they haven't done this. So, in a way, that makes him look bad. (First he says that those in the McCain camp are the ones feeding the bloggers and talk show hosts with it. He then agrees with Stephanopoulos that the McCain camp isn't doing any of this.)

Then he goofs up and says something about his Muslim faith.

All he did was maginify the whole "Obama is a Muslim" talk, or at least to bring it back out again. And he added fuel to the fire.

And if it's a pointless topic, then what was Obama's purpose for all of it anyway? He's the one that brought all of this up on Sunday. He's the one that mentioned a pig yesterday.

Now he's getting upset that he's getting called out on it by the media.

All of this is what makes it a topic today.

Yeah, but who wouldn't want a heartfelt one of these?

A Muslim! We have found a Muslim! Can we burn him?
Belvedere: How do you know that he is a Muslim?
Peasant 2: Because he looks like one!
Barack: I am not a Muslim! I am not a Muslim! They dressed me up like this, and this is not my nose it is a false one!
[Belvedere pulls off the false nose and opens his helmet]
Peasant 1: Well, we did do the nose, and the hat.
Peasant 2: He has a wart.
Belvedere: Why do you think that he is a Muslim?
Peasant 2: Well, he turned me into a newt.
[Belvedere gives him a disbelieving look]
Belvedere: A newt?
[Silence]
Peasant 2: Well I got better.
Peasant 3: Burn him anyway.
[Yells of "Burn him!"]
Belvedere: There are ways of telling whether he is a Muslim. Tell me, what do you do with Muslims?
Peasants: Burn them!
Belvedere: Now, what do burn besides Muslims?
Peasant 3: More Muslims! [receives a punch from Peasant 1; silence]
Peasant 2: Wood?
Belvedere: So, why do Muslims burn? [more silence]
Peasant 2: Because there made of wood?
Belvedere: So, how do you tell if he is made of wood?
Peasant 3: Build a bridge out of him!
Belvedere: Ah, but cant you also build bridges out of stone?
Peasant 3: Oh, right.
Belvedere: Tell me, does wood sink?
Peasant 1: No, it floats.
Belvedere: What also floats in water?
[lots of yelling and many wrong and random answers including very small rocks]
King Arthur: A duck!
Belvedere: Exactly!
Peasant 2: So if he weighs as much as a duck he is made of wood.
Belvedere: And therefore?
Peasants: A Muslim!
Belvedere: We shall use my largest scales.
[Having been revealed to weigh the same as a duck, therefore proving him a Muslim, the crowd goes insane]
Barack: It's a fair cop.

I don't think it's so much the Muslim thing that's a big deal. I think it's that Obama is crying foul over media coverage all of a sudden.

1. how much having a black candidate changes that

2. if that potential change is enough to steal a state or two or three

The black vote in America is a sleeping giant, IMO.
Wouldn't those potential voters be showing in the polls already, though?
Would you consider those voters, ones that refused to vote for a white person but will up and support a black one no questions asked, as racist?
