So has it been determined - is Newcastle Nut Brown Ale a diff beer than Newcastle Brown Ale?

I'm still a fan of Newcastle - maybe for sentimental reasons - it got me into other brown ales and on to stouts and such. Since I've found others that are better - Rogue Hazlenut Nectar, Samuel Smiths Brown Ale, Avery Ellies Brown Ale etc.

After a long layoff, I recently had Newcastle in bottles at a bar, and six pack from grocery. The ones from the store weren't what I expected, maybe a bit skunked. The one at the bar I enjoyed.

Maybe its evolving tastes, greater hops tolerance etc. for example the Schlafly's Pale Ale I never used to like, but its making a comeback with me.

I had one left in the fridge, it's Newcastle Brown Ale. Not "Nut". Just not my thing I guess. I'm drinking a Smithwicks now, it's ok but again I wouldn't buy it again. I really think I'm getting to the point after a few years of experimenation to settle in on the beers I like...

Probably missing a few but I think that's a good range of beer where I don't really need to go outside of that box much anymore.

Guess who was in Wisco this weekend... Convenience store allows you to mix and match for $7.49 a six. I mixed and matched a couple of sixes.

Finally trying a 6 pack of New Belgiums 1554 enlightend Black Ale. great.

Odell's Levity (amber ale) - another good one (all their beers seem to be.)

Schlafly's Oktoberfest is much better (flavorful) on tap than the bottles.

STL area folks may want to check out Charleville's (small winery brewery near St. Genevieve). Whole Foods carries here. Not the best beer ever, but more than quality enough to try and support such a worthy cause. I've been meaning to check out their facility - pretty country & combine a trip there with some nearby hiking. need a designated driver.

Tentative plans to check out the Yazoo brewery in Nashville. Anyone tried their beer?

A weird thing happened this weekend. After our bike ride in Indiana, we went to Bloomington Brewing Co to sample their wares. I tried 3 different ales and could not taste any of the sugar. Everything tasted tinny and flat, almost like a kolsch, while Mrs. Jacky and Smokey ooohed and aahed about the cask ale.

WTF? Can one become temporarily desensitized to sugar after a vigorous workout? I feel like I was cheated out of a chance to taste some great beers.

This reminds me of one of my favorite tricks to use when attempting to bed down the ladies. Most guys will try to get their prey really drunk by making their drinks extra strong or constantly refilling their wine or maybe a roofie or two. Me, I make their drink extra weak then keep refilling it. The placebo effect insures that they are all "drunk" but more importantly uninhibited yet you don't have to worry about her puking on you or passing out*.


*I realize some guys, ICE, would consider this a strike against my technique.

I drank some o'douls the other night for the first time. Sitting at a friend's house we ran out of whatever it was we were drinking. Kinda in the middle of shooting the [expletive], he looks in the fridge and says his wife has some n/a beer in there. We crack a couple and continue the conversation. Didn't hit us that we were up at 3 am, pretty drunk, drinking o'douls and trying to have more or less a business discussion. Someone said "this is stupid" and that was the end of that.
