I tried to play GTA online the other day for the first time in a couple years and tried to fly a helicopter and got repeatedly blown up. Turned on Passive, but then they still saw me heading for the helicopters and blew those up. Of course you get kicked from passive if you fly a helicopter anyway, so I just quit.
You have to join a group if you want to do anything fun. I did that for a while way back, but then people want you to join in on whatever's going on. Plus if you bow out, all the random action on the map is focused on what they're doing.
I like the options and openness of online and it being somewhat unpredictable, but the griefers just ruin it. Single player gets no updates and you're locked into whatever missions are available at the time. Seems like there's a medium between the two they could try for. Having races or specific events in single player be online for example.
