skip and stephen make the country dumber and the fact that ESPN embraces them makes me hate the network so much more.

I only read maybe half that link because it was so long. But, I agree with what Sage Steele (?) said....you can't argue with the producers who point out that the ratings are higher for these 'generated' shows like Tebow's birthday and you can't argue with those who say it is trash.
What is ESPN supposed to do? Sacrafice ratings (and $) to bring more balanced and less 'interesting' news? I wish they would, but it's tough to blame them for operating the way they do.

yeah i understand both sides (ratings/money vs journalistic integrity). but like most things when money comes into the fold things tend to get worse. the complaints against espn aren't really different then the cable news outlets. they are now 24 hrs so they have to trump up minor things, help stir controversy, help soothe idiotic and pointless discussions and give people who normally wouldn't have a voice (because they have nothing substantial to offer) a platform to talk endlessly and the viewing audience is dumb enough to accept it as real news since its on the talking picture box.
espn now has morning shows. that is so odd to me. why do they have to compete with the today show? didn't we get enough of skip, stephen and all the others during sportscenter or around the horn/PTI? it might be worthwhile but they (skip and stephen in particular) have no skill other than talking loud. it's verbal diarrhea. and with the discussion that saigon posted...that is not news! even if tebow had turned out to be a successful NFL quarterback its still not a relevant question. it's as relevant as playing madden '13 and having tebow as the QB for the 49'ers and making a decision based on that.
i'm ranting and don't have a real point and this is the manti thread. i suppose i'm most "angry" at the viewing audience. they, the majority, allow this and i'm "forced" to watch this type of television when i do watch espn (i dont have cable tv) or visit the site. so i'm mad at "them" for making this the norm. plus, sports are sports. it's so trivial when it comes down to it. theres only so much soap opera i can take. sports are supposed to help take my mind off my own stupid issues and when the first stories on sportscenter are about some guy who had a fake girlfriend, someone who cheated or the status of a fringe NFL'er i lose interest real fast.

You have a point that these cable networks needing to fill their 24 hours up with...something.Jocephus wrote:yeah i understand both sides (ratings/money vs journalistic integrity). but like most things when money comes into the fold things tend to get worse. the complaints against espn aren't really different then the cable news outlets. they are now 24 hrs so they have to trump up minor things, help stir controversy, help soothe idiotic and pointless discussions and give people who normally wouldn't have a voice (because they have nothing substantial to offer) a platform to talk endlessly and the viewing audience is dumb enough to accept it as real news since its on the talking picture box.

The CBS Sports Network (which I didn't even know existed until yesterday) is having 50 hours of Super Bowl pre-game coverage this week. I saw it advertised yesterday on CBS's crawl at the bottom of their basketball coverage.

In the end we're all in the hands of a majority we wish didn't exist.stlouie_lipp wrote:have you read this: http://deadspin.com/5929361/how-espn-di ... ebow-storyJocephus wrote:skip and stephen make the country dumber and the fact that ESPN embraces them makes me hate the network so much more.

So how much money would it take for you to be Skip Bayless, (who I pray is actually 'Skip Bayless') ? It would have to be in seven figures for me... and I'm poor as hell. I know they're both significant, but I'd be fascinated to see what percentage prostitute and idiot each take in the actual Skip pie chart.
I'm sure he rolls a lot of eyes in Bristol, though not to give them a pass here.

Visit most any football forum and you'll understand why that garbage can draw such ratings.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:I only read maybe half that link because it was so long.
