The entire concept of the replacement-level player is that these are the kind of guys you can pick up for free.
Brandon Duckworth is worse than Jeff Suppan..or about just as bad..He's below replacement level.
I think his point is that you could seriously pick just about any name out of a hat.

This, of course, enhances the credibility of your argument.

A. Kennedy, S. Rolen, R. Ludwick. All gone for one reason or another. I'm sure La Russa has more clout with Dewitt than Mo.

Mo had a sentimental attachment to Ludwick. Scouting him, tracked him down before he almost retired, etc. I think he would be selling high.
Welcome back! And goodbye!

I'm not sure what will happen to the LaRussa-Ludwick Swiss bank accounts, the Bahamian money laundering operation, the joint holdings in Afghan poppy farms, or the Tajikistan political assassination camps. You'd think Mo would think these deals through.

I just got in and I haven't read past the second post of this thread, so I apologize if I'm repeating here. I'll probably go to my grave before I figure out why LaRussa hated Ludwig so much. On the surface, he seemed to be the paradigm of a LaRussa player. My first impression is that this move makes the team worse instead of better. Hopefully as I catch up with this thread, I'll see why I'm wrong.

Or realize you just summarized the last 30 pages.

The only thing I can figure is that since Ludwick cost us nothing to obtain - we signed him as a minor-league free agent after the 2006 season - they figured he was therefore *worth* nothing, and that's why we got so little for him.

I can't wait for Luddy to hit a bomb off of Westbrook in the playoffs...

That must be it...I expect a middle relief prospect for Pujols when we trade him...since he didn't cost us anything to obtain him.

I think it was the day of the deadline and they were desperate to help shore up the starting rotation and made the only deal, at least for someone they were "targeting", available to them.
