No, we are doing the opposite -- we are alledging that teams are stealing signs, and then interpreting the data in a way that supports that foregone conclusion ... rather than looking at the data and saying "wow, serious outlier, look for evidence to explain that."Arthur Dent wrote:Isn't that exactly what we are doing?MGL wrote:In this case we are not looking at all teams H/R splits and then suggesting that the ones with large splits may be stealing signs…

I don't want to go through forty pages of back-and-forth with Brewers fans, but did somebody supply evidence of misconduct beyond odd home/away splits?

Re: Brewers are Stealing Signs
Admittedly it's a little bit of a grey area because the original contention arose from someone on ESPN pointing out their home/road win/loss record, which is of course heavily influenced by their home/road batting splits, and speculating that they were stealing signs. It's really an unavoidable little conundrum because unless you see someone stealing signs the hypothesis is almost certain to be influenced by home/road splits, and if you catch someone stealing signs who needs to run statistics on it?
Regardless, I think there is enough circumstantial evidence (TLR's contention, the organizational history of sign-stealing, the runner-on-second splits, and Ryan Braun's douchebag face) to warrant specifically looking at Milwaukee.

"In this case we are not looking at all teams H/R splits and then suggesting that the ones with large splits may be stealing signs… "
There has only been allegations that the Brewers have been stealing signs, but not based on any knowledge of how they are doing it or how they're relaying the information back to the hitter. The Toronto deal is different, in they at least have people claiming to see how they executed the signal.
The Brewers thing is based entirely upon "look how good they are at home, they have to be cheating."

It's at least equally based on Ryan Braun being a massive tool, so the analysis is still valid.

All the irrefutable evidence needed to know that the Brewers are cheating:cpebbles wrote:It's at least equally based on Ryan Braun being a massive tool, so the analysis is still valid.
