Contraction?
I'll play the devil's advocate, why not expansion? Seems to work for the fan and maybe baseball in general,
Smaller stadiums ~20-30 thousand seats
Get rid of most of the minor leagues
Instead of divisions, have conferences (a la NCAA basketball)
Lower ticket prices
Most of the minor leaguers will have the chance to prove themselves
MLB gains exposure all over the country
Better localized rivalries
Shorten the season and have a tourny at the end of the season

They already did that.... The Milwaukee Beers beat the Dallas Convicts for the championship
Wow Jenny looked good in that movie.

Get creative . . . you'll find methods around this.Redbirdruss wrote:I would like to thank everyone for all of their insightfull and well reasoned answers to this difficult question.
Now for my answer:
You should do something about the cost of the beer. $9 for a Budweiser?
You gotta be kidding me...

I guess I don't understand, you recognize the talent base is diluted, so the solution is to make it even worse?TimeForGuinness wrote:It is already bad...and prices are high.mcgee51taguchi99 wrote:Further dilution of the talent base = BADTimeForGuinness wrote:Contraction?

If it is already diluted, then why the high prices? And if it dilutes more, you really wouldn't see a drop in good baseball and the prices would come down. Think of it like college basketball, most of them good teams, and the inter-conference matchups are fun.
Granted there is a cutoff...I'm not saying there has to be 300 teams. But if there were twice or three times as many teams as now, the cost of the business would diminish, cheaper prices, and talent would be not much different.
Granted, there probably has to be a salary cap to keep everyone fair...
Oh, and I am just playing the devil's advocate...just arguing the other side of contraction.
I guess you could make the same argument about contraction though, less teams, higher talent...maybe a drop off in salary because the demand for great baseball players would be low. But then again, you wouldn't be reaching as many markets, and the prices would still be high.
