Now Hafner although he is a beast is already 30 years old. There is no way he will ever be a hall of famer. Even if he hits 40HRs each years until he turns 40 he will just pass 500 HRs which i dont think will be as automatic as it is right now.
He's a DH too. If Edgar Martinez is going to be borderline, Hafner is going to have to be very, very good throughout his entire 30's.

Izzy has averaged 34 saves since 1999 (7 full seasons).

If he averages 34 saves for 3 more years, he will move into the top ten on the all time list.

Other active closers that would potentially be ahead of him in the top ten at that time would be Billy Wagner, Jose Mesa and Roberto Hernandez.

Up until last year, Lee Smith was the all-time leader, and he hasn't come close to election.

Izzy hasn't even been a top 5 closer in MLB during his career. He should probably be considered the best in baseball for at least a season or two to match the other closers in the Hall (Eck, Sutter, etc.).

Izzy can save another 100 games, and I think he'll be closer to falling off the ballot in the first election (actually, he probably won't even get that many votes) than the 75% required.

A few names I'd call very boderline are Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones, and Soriano. I'd say A.Jones has the best chance of the three. I'll be surprised if Chipper Jones has a lot left in him. Injuries seem to be common and I sort of see the twilight of his career a bit like Dale Murphy's. Soriano probably shouldn't even be in this discussion.

I also think Edmonds' chances are kinda slim, unless he has a great finish to his career... which I think is far from given. Rolen is an even longer shot than Edmonds unless something changes. Izzy is very unlikely to get 100 more saves in the next 3 years and even if he does, I still think he'd be a long longshot.

I won't be surprised if none of these people make it, with the two hotshot defensive centerfielders having the best chances.

There are guys better or at least equally good who should go in if Edmonds does.

To me, Belle and Gonzalez are both HOFers before Edmonds. Personally, I think Dawson is as well considering his numbers in light of the era he played.

I don't think Edmonds in the HOF is going to reduce the quality of the HOF. There are worse players inducted for sure.

And going with the subjective side, there just has never been a time when I've thought he was a HOF. When I watched Gonzalez and Belle play, I always felt they were.
Why do seemingly inteligent Cubs fans go retarded when it comes to Edmonds?

1, I don't think Vance has said anything remotely retarded. Edmonds is far from a sure hall of famer.
2, The same reason seemingly intelligent Cardinals fans go retarded when it comes to Zambrano.

I don't take issue with anyone saying Edmonds isn't sure hall of famer. Hes defintely borderline. When you say Juan freakin Gonzalez should be in before him, I have a big promblem.

I don't think intelligent Cardinal fans go retarded when it comes to Zambranos talent. Most recognize hes one of the best pitchers in the game. We hate him because of his 5 year old temper tantrums.

Rolen and Edmonds will have a hard time getting in. IMHO.
Except for Ryne Sandberg...

But yeah, I'd say unless Rolen puts up about 5 more years at 2003/04 level, which ought to put his career BA around .290, and his HR around 400, he's not going to get in. There is a definite lack of third basemen in the HoF (the fewest of any position, except DH/bullpen) but still, Rolen is definitely a long shot.

Here's a breakdown from BP as far as Edmonds' chances at the HoF. Basically, he's likely to be considered the second best center fielder of his era, and has a very good shot at the HoF. Note: This was written before offseason surgery and the onset of PCS, so it might be a bit more rosy of an outlook than seems prudent now.

IMO, Edmonds' HoF candidacy will turn on his season this year. If he comes back strong, and can keep at that level for two-three more seasons, he's a lock. Maybe not first ballot, but definitely keeps at 50+ percent for enough years that he eventually gets in, a la Bruce Sutter. If he basically repeats his 2006 season for the next two years and then is replaced by Rasmus, he falls short, barring a very friendly veteran's committee.
