Unless more develops, most of the rain should stay to the southeast of STL. Play ball!

Kind of surprised there's no Nyjer Morgan tonight. I figured Roenicke would have him in there in the hopes that he distracts or otherwise messes with Carpenter. Maybe he wanted more defense with Kotsay, anticipating a pitcher's duel?

Defensive metrics don't really like Mark Kotsay anymore. I think the decision is based on small sample histories of the two players: Kotsay is 4-11 against carpenter (.364), while Morgan is just 4-23 (.174). Whether those stats are meaningful at all is a discussion in itself, but I bet that's what the decision was based on.

Not the reason. Kotsay is a terrible OF, especially in Center. I would have been happy with Gomez out there as he has swung the stick well lately and is exceptional on D. This is just a horrendous decision by Roenicke. He will cost the Crew at least 1 run in the field.

I wonder if it's because Nyjer's focus might be more on being the center of attention instead of the game.

Cool, thanks for checking in with this. I had no clue about Kotsay's defense, I just figured there had to be some reason for Roenicke to use him. Looks like there pretty much isn't. Good news.

(watch him have a crucial hit in the game now)

I have no idea if this is right or not, but according to fangraphs, Gomez>Morgan>>>>Kotsay on D.

Morgan is a 4 WAR guy this year according to fangraphs as well....
