Brunch

There's some chain called Snooze that just opened up here. They only serve brunch - every day of the week, just brunch. The kicker is that you have to wait over an hour to get a table.

Brunch is supposed to be casual, the idle luxury of the hungover and childless 20something. If you have to wait an hour for it, it loses its value.

Anyway, I hear they offer pancake flights, which is intriguing, but I'll never go there. Hour wait my ass.

We have a Snooze in Boulder. Same thing as far as the lines go. One time we waited. It was good but not worth that kind of wait.

In Chicago it's Bongo Room. Bongo Room is an abortion, an affront against taste and mankind. A place where they happily offer multiple pancake choices, but they all come covered in different gooey and sickly sweet toppings like pumpkin-butter-maple-brown sugar-pepita "syrup" and crap like that. But people line up outside that place, even in February, because it's a popular brunch place. And it's a license to print money because their food cost is so low for breakfast style items that the markup is outrageous.

I've been to 3 or those - just because they were no wait, and close. And they were all good. (Katie's, Reed's, and the place next to Chesire Inn.) the key is just go to an area that has a stretch of bars and restaurants - and someplace is bound to be available. Maplewood etc, or South Grand. sometimes we end up at nicer restaurant, or bar like Crow's Nest (heavy metal brunch), or greasy diner eating eggs or pancakes. Regardless, it is a win.

Bongo Room, and Snooze. Those sound awful. I'm sure you heard of Walker Brothers Pancake House in Evanston. Ugh. In STL, we have a City Coffeehouse and Creperie in Clayton -lot's of standing in line -and people trolling around for seats. Bah.
Rooster in St L is good in spite of bordering along the lines of catering to bourgeois brunchers. Their new So Grand place is plenty big and have had decent food/experience there ( though I had the worst biscuit ever there. they have beer, which is a plus.

Anyways, A weekend morning - the last thing I want is a brunch of pretentious bull [expletive].

Hubby and I had brunch at 3 Monkeys on Morganford. Really good and the first bloody mary was free; .99 after that although it was Easter Sunday. Can't imagine they are always .99

Brunch is great. At home.

I agree with this post one billion percent. You don't have to pay an exorbitant markup. You get exactly what you want, the way you want it. You don't have to look down at some dude's gross yellow toenails because he's too lazy to not wear flip-flops out to eat. You don't have to worry that the hollandaise is a room temp pot of staphlococcus infection waiting to happen or that you're eating fish that came in on Thursday and didn't sell on Thursday/Friday/Saturday and so is now on "special." You don't have to endure the fourth-string service staff. You don't have to throw down $3.50 on a mug of coffee. You don't have to listen to Billy Joel on the soundsystem. You don't have to endure some foodie at the next table standing on their table to take a pic of their boring omelet for their Instagram.

I know what you're thinking about that last one. It's real. I was at The Bristol in Chicago like 3 years ago having a Mrs-imposed brunch with another couple and we were next to this young couple, and the girl had a big ol fancy DSLR camera and after the food came she stood on her chair and took like 614 pics of her breakfast, arranging the plate repeatedly and taking more pics. For like 2 minutes. That behavior isn't even ok in a place with beautiful food, let alone during brunch, when you're taking a pic of some fried up eggs.
