Gray is now 36, is owed $35 million next year, and just posted a 96 ERA+. He's basically what Gibson/Lynn were as free agents last year. He'll have some trade value if we eat $20 million.

Gray's peripheral stats looked good last season: 84 FIP-, 75 xFIP-, 3.29 SIERA
7th amongst qualified SP in K-BB%
Are we really judging pitchers by ERA in 2025?

Gray is good. Probably $30M good, which means he has zero trade value even while being good.

Sonny went to Boston expecting that they would be a contender—and they are in last place. He has already publicly stated that he would be “open” to listening to proposals from the Red Sox to trade him. Only this year he’s having a terrific season and is coveted by the fans of many teams. Willson Contreras has been named to the All-Star Game as a replacement and Sonny might make it too, after his teammate Ranger Suárez got injured. I wonder if Sonny misses St. Louis.

The Red Sox have won 14 in a row and now are in the Wild Card hunt. Sonny might not get traded now. Willson has already publicly stated that he wants to stay in Boston and will not waive his NTC. I would like to see them stay together.

The Cardinals have performed above expectations due to the emergence of new all-star quality talent. However, I think the front office has known for quite some time that there will be a regression and this is still a rebuilding year. I would be surprised if Bloom does anything other than preparing for the next three years. Even a single MLB tracked prospect for a few months of Gray would likely be too much for their plans.
