Reading and hearing quotes like this are starting to piss me off. The Cards had a really good offer on the table for over a year. So, basically they blew their chance by not increasing their offer by $50 million? If they wanted to spend that much they could have signed him today. They decided that type of contract wasn't in the team's best interest; they didn't "blow their chance".
The Cardinals? They blew their chance to keep Pujols by allowing him to reach free agency. They could have signed him to a contract extension long before he hit the market, and probably for far fewer dollars than he ultimately received. But they never completed such a deal.

Another thought I just had - Albert probably gets more endorsements out of this move, so potentially the contract is just the beginning.

On the other hand, if he offered you 9 years at $198 million right now, take it or leave it, I'm pretty sure that I know what you would do!
Not if you had someone whispering "I'll do you for 10 years at $220 million" in your ear. You'd be a fool not to listen.
And if after that someone came in and said "I'll make 10 years at $260" you'd be a bigger fool not to say "HELL YES!"
Actually, I have to disagree with you completely. If I had $198 million in hand, I guaran-damn-tee you that there is nothing you are anyone else could whisper in my ear to keep me from jumping at it. Of course, my earnings potential is significantly different than that of a professional athelete.

I'm putting together an offer. I'm just not sure how to handle existing members.

Let the stilted guest appearances on next year's fall sitcoms commence.
