An update in two parts:

PART ONE:

Daughter actually wound up being offered the full rides at SIUE and UMSL, and wound up choosing UMSL because of their Psych program. She's still going to go to grad school for OT, but now she doesn't have to rush, and she is close to home and her BF. AND she's part of a GotV club going around and registering college students all of STL right now!

PART TWO:

Son is setting sail on a 2 week research trip with NOAA. His professors are actually jealous of him getting to go. They are catching/tagging/recording info about Red Snapper in the Gulf of Mexico. Luckily the TS/hurricane forecast for this week is steering east a bit, and their ship is going towards Galveston.

Awesome! How do they catch the snapper and release them safely?

A year ago or so AW jr and I went out with my f-i-l and his friend and friend's wife fishing for snapper in the gulf. We launched from surfside, near freeport about 40 miles west of Galveston. Went about 80 miles south, stopping at shrimp boats that were dumping bycatch. Caught a few sharks but nothing to keep, unfortunately. Got way the F out there, with nothing around, and saw about 10 other boats all snapper fishing. There was a massive school over some old oil rig piers that had been cut off. Caught our limit (10 which is 2 per person) in about 15 minutes. It was wild, there were a bunch of dolphins eating the snapper that gone thrown back. It takes the snappers a while to re-submerge to the depths since their air sac expands when you pull them up from 150' deep or so, there's a way to puncture that but even then... Going to guess about 10% of the snappers released made it back to the bottom.

Coming back in I was talking to the captain (f-i-l's friend). He said he used to be a guide and this was a pretty typical trip. 2 hour boat ride to get out there, 2 hour boat ride to get back in. 15 minutes of productive fishing. There's little to no cover in the gulf and sediment from the Mississippi as well as all the other rivers blankets anything that they try to establish. So the fish are pretty sporadic but you'll run into massive schools when they find something they like.

A couple days later I saw a video on youtube of some commercial deepliners catching snapper by the hundreds and apparently they get to keep them all. Which seemed quite unfair.

Anyway, we ate 6 of the snappers that night, put them on the grill with some tomatoes/peppers/onions and served over rice. It was delicious.

Fascinating.

I really don't know much about the process, honestly. I know they have caught a tiger shark and a hammerhead shark though! They had to go to port in Galveston due to the hurricane though. He's having a great experience, it sounds like.
