If you were John Mozeliak, who would you sign/trade for to upgrade the team. I keep hearing Arrieta/Moustakas/Hosmer. I'm not sure they really need a CI, and Arrieta has come down from his Cy Young days. Personally I'd like to see a trade of Gyorko or Carpenter if you're going to trade for a CI and sign Darvish and one more bullpen piece.

If they just want to spend money, sign Lorenzo Cain.
If they want to do more talent-package trades, then just keep pestering TOR about Donaldson until they give in,.
Why on earth would we sign Lorenzo Cain? Does Cameron even know who is on the Cardinals' roster?
LOL yeah I was about to post the same thing. WTF is Cameron thinking?

The Curious Bidding War for Eric Hosmer
by Travis Sawchik - January 3, 2018
By now, you are probably aware of the dilemma regarding Hosmer. He looks the part: an athletic, 6-foot-4, left-handed first baseman who is adept at vacuuming up short throws as a defender. He is also praised as a clubhouse leader. He’s a young free agent, entering just his age-28 season. But he’s remained wildly inconsistent in overall performance and seems determined to keep pounding balls into the turf while demonstrating little interest in evolving.
Over seven years in the majors, Hosmer has produced single-season WAR totals of 0.0 (2014), -0.1 (2016), and -1.7 (2012). He posted another GB/FB ratio north of 2.0 this past season, the third straight campaign in which he’s crossed that threshold. Hosmer’s average launch angle since 2015 (4.3 degrees) ranks 378th out of 399 hitters (minimum 300 balls in play), according to Baseball Savant data. Last season, Hosmer ranked 371st with a 3.8-degree launch angle.
Hosmer might become more consistent. He might even be able to change his swing and become a more productive offensive player. Maybe the defensive metrics that rate him as a poor defender are missing something. Still, a combination of the factors considered above and the uncertainty of what they for his future has certainly contributed to limiting his market.

i absolutely love cain, so if they decide to trade high on pham, and place him there i'd be cool with it.
(cain is obv a couple years older, and pham is cheap...so there is that downside. but pham's eye history freaks me out, and who knows if that was the real him)

Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune hears the Padres' seven-year offer to Eric Hosmer is for less than $140 million.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today pegged the offer right at $140 million in a report from Wednesday morning, but it sounds like the Padres haven't gone quite that high in their pursuit of the 28-year-old free agent first baseman. They might have to if they want to land him, as Nightengale also reported Wednesday that the Royals have made Hosmer a seven-year, $147 million offer to return to Kansas City. It's unclear where the Cardinals stand in all of this.

Just so that we are reminded how silly professional sports salaries are, if Hosmer's real offer is for 7/$139MM rather than 7/$140MM, that would mean he would make $143,000 less per season. You know, a pretty darn good salary for a normal person.

I'm assuming it's at least $3.5 million less than $140 and probably more than that. It just seems they like these salaries to be rounded or ended $.5 whenever possible.

Hosmer would be wise to go to Boston if there is an offer on the table. I think his swing and the way he hits the ball oppo is perfect for Fenway. He'd have by far his best offensive seasons there.
Just stay away from The Lou

Hosmer is overrated and I wish he'd hurry up and sign somewhere so we don't have to talk about him.
When his BABIP is sky high he is good. But it won't stay that way. And his defense sucks.

I have zero interest in Hosmer at the prices they are reporting he is being offered. Not much interest in him even at a much smaller price tag. I agree that I hope he signs somewhere soon so that the Cards don't end up in the discussions more.

It feels like teams are limiting salary spending at a time when revenues continue to rise. Is this an illusion?

I think three huge salary teams decided they wanted to reset the penalties, and that's depressed the whole market. The Giants "should" be in on JDM, the Yankees "should" be in on Mike Moustakas, and the Dodgers "should" be in on Yu/Jake. None of the three will sign with those teams, and that means their agents are trying to push for a salary from 27 other teams that traditionally don't have the same salary outlays. And teams like that, well teams in general, like to wait as long as possible to try and get a bargain.
