He hit him in the chest, with his shoulder. How can that even be considered remotely malicious?

He blindsided a guy who was focused on guarding someone else before a pass was even completed. It's impossible to guard a guy that doesn't have the ball and have your "head on a swivel" at the same time. For all the protection WRs get now and all this discussion of what constitutes a defenseless player, maybe the defenders' brains deserve some protection too? Perhaps your opinion would be different if it wasn't a Broncos player. Like I said before, I don't think Welker intentionally tried to hurt him. But these pick plays are definitely in a gray area of what is dangerous and what is just football, and probably need to be looked at.Socnorb11 wrote:Really?Transmogrified Tiger wrote:I don't know if that's maliciously dirty

It WAS a Broncos player, just moments before that play. Did you read the article?cardsfansince82 wrote:He blindsided a guy who was focused on guarding someone else before a pass was even completed. I'm not saying that the play should be legal or not, but if it's "malicious", then every receiver on every team is "malicious". There's nothing at all unusual about this play, other than Talib getting hit awkwardly, or landing awkwardly, or whatever it was that caused him to leave the game. It's called a pick play, and it happens all game long in the NFL. So do open-field collisions between receivers and defensive backs -- like the one a few minutes before Welker ran into Talib, when Patriots receiver Julian Edelman ran into Broncos defensive back Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who had to leave the game but later returned.

Yes, I read the article. And like I said earlier, every team runs these plays. Like I also said earlier, Welker wasn't trying to hurt him so we are in agreement that it wasn't malicious or whatever word you are hung up on. But the picks aren't supposed to happen before the ball gets there where the defender has no chance to see it, that's why the play absolutely is unusual. That play should have been flagged for offensive PI.

It's an illegal play, in my opinion. I'm not disputing that. It also gets called about as often as traveling does in the NBA.
You were right earlier - they've made the game too easy for receivers. It's really a stretch to think that Welker was intentionally trying to take Talib out of the game, though. I mean, if you're going to do that, you go for a knee. There is no way a guy Welker's size hits a guy like Talib on the numbers with the intention of taking him out of the game.
Yeah, I do think that the term "malicious" is significant. If Belichick doesn't accuse Welker of intentionally trying to hurt Talib, then there is no story here at all. Heck, Belichick's own players disagreed with his assessment.

Re: Rams and other teams 2013 NFL season thread
Not to start a new semantics discussion, but that's not a true pick play. They just call it that because Dilfer or Collinsworth or some other know it all dip [expletive] hasn't come up with a term for it. A true pick play happens right off the snap before guys are running full speed. You are correct that they often make contact before the ball gets there. They design the routes where it looks accidental and it's not really about blowing the guy up, more about just getting in his way. The purpose of the pick is to create the opening for the pass to be completed in the first place, and is more about moving the chains than hitting a home run. The Welker play happens after a full drop back and the WR being open is already assumed. Guys are crossing at full speed and the pass is supposed to already be completed when the blocking WR tees off on the defender. If the guy guarding Welker doesn't change direction immediately and make the tackle it's a huge gain. It's like a delayed, downfield, WR screen or something. Since the defender is running full speed and doesn't see the block coming it is way more dangerous than a typical pick. It really should have been offensive PI, but unless they make the entire concept illegal this is just sour grapes from Belichick.

Probably offensive pass interference, but it's REALLY close. Former VP of officiating Mike Pereira says it wasn't OPI. Tough call.
It actually looks like Welker got the worse of the collision.
Worst part for me is watching Demaryius Thomas drop that pass............ over and over and over....
