The hole in the pen doesn't concern me at all. Salas, Walters, Sanchez... someone can fill that hole. What concerns me is that Lohse and McClellan would be counted on in the rotation from game 1 to game 162.
The rest would depend on what kind of 2nd baseman you're talking about trading for. Considering our budget restrictions, I can't see it being a real impact guy.

I wouldn't count on Lohse for production or health, which is all the more depressing since that's presumably why he was signed to such a high value contract.

I want to see a competition between Lohse and McClellan next year. Lohse's salary makes turning him into a reliever an odd choice, but it might be the best for the club. Right now, I think that he would be better as a reliever than as a starter. Likewise, I think that McClellan would be better as a starter than Lohse would be as a starter. So, I give it a go in ST and see what shakes out.

You could trade him, according to Fangraphs, for David Wright straight up.
But 130 OPS+ don't grow on trees. Especially not at league minimum with, what should be, plus defense in center.

That sounds about right. He's got a ton of value because a lot of his value is tied up in his potential, his age, the position he plays, and his price tag. Those are all far better reasons to keep him than trade him. Especially since you would almost certainly be adding significant salary if you traded him for an impact player and salary is the problem for us.

exactly. It would be hard enough to trade him and get equal value in return (much less better) but it would be next to impossible to do that without taking on more payroll.
he just needs to play everyday, whether that's a manager problem or a problem with him.
