I mostly wanted to complain about my workplace. Why are engineering offices always so incredibly ugly, while lawyers get to build palaces downtown or convert nice old homes?

Probably because lawyer offices are required to be aesthetically pleasing so that we can impress existing and prospective clients. Also, you want to keep engineers away from direct sunlight, so as to avoid complications.
