Well, I've got no problem being the guinea pig. The guy doing this also has a clinic in Vegas where they charge $3800 for the same procedure.

I've spoken with a doc in town about PRP and he swears by it. Says he has been using it on race horses for years and started using it on patients/himself/other doctors in his office in recent years. He guessed it was what Pujols did to get back to playing baseball so quickly last summer....at least some variation of it (injecting stem cells to the area to grow new cells quickly).

I may be stupid, but I buy into the science. They spin the blood to separate the different layers and take the stem cells/hormone rich areas and re-inject them back to the injured area. The stem cells and hormones repair/regrow tissue/bone/ligaments/cartilage/etc that is damaged. So....yeah, I'm gonna try it. Probably next week.

FWIW, I have a slap tear. A type II B slap tear I think is the way they described it.

Anyway, back to the procedure. The cost is $700. The timetable for return is 10-15 days and if it doesn't work, they'll do it again and again and again until it does. Pain relief is supposed to be immediate - 1 day. And within 3 weeks back to 100%. Sounds like a gamble that is at least worth taking. If nothing else, I'll be out $700. Surgery would likely cost $4K or so after all is said and done. And as you all know, the rehab is a year or so and out for at least 6 weeks right from the get go.
I wore some of those little magnets for awhile on my knee and shoulder while I slept, and honestly felt a bit better. Unfortunately they disappeared in the laundry one day and I haven't found new ones.

Then again, it could have been those $200 jeans I was wearing that made me feel so good.

If you have a SLAP, the magnets probably won't help. You probably need a surgical intervention.

I mean, this prp thing might not work. But for [expletive]'s sake, it's worth a shot. Even if it doesn't work....and surgery is still required, there's at least enough evidence that it works to aid in recovering from a surgery. And, if that's the case - that surgery is still required - then the doc agreed to continue prp treatment after surgery for no charge.

I kind of feel like this is a win win. The only way it's a loss is if PRP is complete bull [expletive] and does absolutely zero good. And, imo, there's enough empirical evidence out there on the internet (which of course has to be true) to give it a shot.

Worst case scenario is surgery is required ($4K) and I waste $700 on PRP which has zero benefit and rehab takes the full year.
Best case scenario is surgery isn't required and PRP ($700) fixes it.

I'm more than willing to make that gamble even if the likely scenario is surgery is still required ($4K) and PRP ($700) shortens the rehab which imo is well worth $700 even if it just shaves off a couple months.

In other words, the way I see it is I fully believe there are benefits of PRP and the extent is all that is unknown. Therefore, it's a given that I'm going to do it even if that means doing it after surgery to expedite rehab. So, why not just go ahead and for no extra cost give it a shot before surgery with the hope of fixing the problem outright. If that doesn't work, then go ahead and go the surgery route with PRP benefits thrown in as well.

It's your body and your money, so give it a whirl. I hope you have a full recovery. Just remember how long it takes for shoulders to fully heal.

Just a quick update. I'm finally doing that PRP thing on Wednesday of next week. I did some rehab and the pain got significantly better, though the range of motion hasn't improved and pain is still there for certain functions (racquetball, mainly, and throwing a basketball or baseball 100%). I've tried and tried rehab, but nothing is getting it back to 100%.

I'm pretty pumped. Hopefully this works. It will save a boatload of money, time, and suffering if it does.

That pain means you're having an MI.

Anecdotally speaking, PRP is the [expletive].

It's been 4 months since having it done and I have zero limitations in my shoulder anymore. I have zero pain, 100% strength and 100% range of motion. None of this is shown with an MRI, but I can do lifts I couldn't do in June do to lack of range of motion. I can lift more, pain free, than I could back in June. Not that I'm trying to lift as much as 3 years ago, or whenever, but still....

Basketball doesn't hurt. Driving doesn't hurt. There is literally not a movement I make that hurts like it used to. I have no doubt racquetball caused this injury and I'm going to start playing in December again. To be honest, if I have to do this (PRP) once every 5-10 years, I have no problem paying that price to play racquetball.

I would never recommend someone do what I did based on my results. But, I will say if you go back and read where I was:

seriously, I can not lift my elbow above my shoulder. If i ttry to extend my arm while straight out to the side, I get a shooting pain in the front of my shoulder and I either have to stop or the pain continues.,. I can extend it to the front, but it isn't comfortable. If I have my elbow at a 90 degree bend, try to get my elbow as high as it will go and rotate my wrist/hand upwards, it is torture. Where is HJ? I need advice on how to make this all go away and get back to normal.
feel jim's pain. I barely slept last night. There is literally not a single position that I can stay in without it hurting. Went to doc, headed to ortho in a couple weeks. For now, I'm just stuck looking like a stroke victim with my right arm. It is difficult to even type.
Significant tear in the post something something something lasamus piece of [expletive] [expletive] muscle [expletive]. Surgery likely according to my pcp/mri [expletive]. [expletive]. [expletive]. [expletive]. [expletive]. [expletive]. [expletive].
This last one was meant to say a type ii slap tear. surgery required according to the ortho surgeon.

Surgery wasn't required. I rehabbed by myself for a year or so then did the PRP and am at 100%. [expletive]. Yes.
