Re: rant: fine dining
I'm with you on that. Also, I had my favorite plate of food ever there about six months ago (butter-poached escolar with fresh dill, blue prawns and dragon beans iirc), but I left hungry after spending $120 because they couldn't be bothered to put a [expletive] potato on the plate. I know there's a sharing aspect and the food comes out when it's ready etc, but for $25...

I never noticed the sharing thing. We sat off in that front section on our visit.haltz wrote:I'm with you on that. And someone mentioned the Stables
http://www.saucemagazine.com/blog/?tag=cassy-viresCome June, restaurant-goers interested in communal dining can head to Table, a restaurant taking the space formerly occupied by The Stable. Table is a project by chef Cassy Vires and her husband Josh Renbarger, owners of Home Wine Kitchen in Maplewood. According to a press release, Table will offer a menu of “internationally inspired small plates, all finished with Vires’ signature twists.”

After a couple of so-so yet $$$ experiences at Home, I'm done with them. Example: appetizer was Halibut cheeks prepared such and such ( i don't recall) for $16. Out of halibut so the subbed shrimp, 3 shrimp, for the same price. [expletive].

I've only sat at the bar, and they treat it sort of tapas-style with the timing (food comes out when it's ready, as an individual plate), or so it was explained to me on both of my visits.
I like Home also (the service and the cheap wine list are fantastic), and I hope they do something cool in that beautiful space. Whoever cooks there can get a little heavy-handed with certain dishes (actually, I'm not a huge fan of the food in general tbh). The balsamic gravy with the chicken and waffles at Home makes the dish unbearably sweet, even for a brunch item.

Have you been to Acero, haltz? Same chef/owner as The Crossing? I love both those places.
How about Fox and Hounds since it reopened? I'm curious about the food since they spent a ton rehabbing.
Lastly, why did Niche close in Benton Park and move to Clayton? I mean, they couldn't have supported it in both places?

It's been a while for dinner. We liked our first visit. 2nd one was less impressive. Brunch one time was great. Now we opt for fine dining on Crow's Nest bar foodlukethedrifter wrote:After a couple of so-so yet $$$ experiences at Home, I'm done with them. Haven't been, but they poached our night sous chef and I have a good friend that manages there in the FOH. I've been to the F&H Bar since it reopened, but not Basso or whatever. I have a couple of friends that were underwhelmed.
My next stop is Olio in Tower Grove.
Gerard Craft is a dick, and used Benton Park as a launching pad. Now he's pulling out completely. Niche also went to a tasting menu only (or so I've heard). I still love Taste, but Pastaria was just good, Brasserie sucks, and Niche moved so he can suck it.
edit - never been to Acero

The long-haired, mustached bartender (pictured) there wrote this Bieber concert review for the RFT. It's pretty funny.Freed Roger wrote:It's been a while for dinner. This isn't so much directed at you, but seemed like a good place for it.lukethedrifter wrote:After a couple of so-so yet $$$ experiences at Home, I'm done with them. I hate ordering fish or seafood unless it's fried catfish or poboys. It seems fish is always overpriced and even if it isn't, it rarely is enough to fill me up. There is some algorithm in my head with 3 variables (Taste, Amount of Food, and Price) used to select something off the menu. And, ordering fish usually means I'll want to order a 2nd entree just to be satiated.

Olio was really disappointing. I love what Salume Beddu does but Olio was really off. Seemed like the staff was making up [expletive] as they went along. Ordered a poached egg dish, she came back and said their egg poacher was broken. Asked about a vegetable remoulade dish and got an absolutely incorrect description and definition. It tasted like overseasoned cole slaw. I don't remember the rest but it was really not what I was expecting.
On a side note, my wife was very disappointed in me wearing my Georgetown hoodie sweatshirt to such a fancy place.
