Re: rant: fine dining
You were 7 blocks from what based on your anonymous internet message board persona is something I think you'd really dig.
I'm wondering if you could walk us through the steps that took jim, who loves refreshing beer, authentic and good Mexican food, and chain seafood, and hates Chicago, to Geja's, which is by all accounts an outdated, overpriced, non-chain-seafood, non-Mexican, city of Chicago date spot usually occupied only by people whose friends have no taste and tell them "you'd love it, it's like real romantic and you can dip bread in cheese and meat in oil and it's like real fun and romantic and have him take you there."
Were I advising jim where to go in Chicago for a special occasion that doesn't require a splurge and a few of which would maybe change his mind a bit on fine dining, based on what I know about him I'd probably go:
1. Topolobambo
2. Frontera
3. Mexique
4. Big Star
5. Mixteco
6. Sol de Mexico
7. Las Palmas
8. Boka for that awesome roast chicken ($27) and a Metropolitan Krankshaft ($6)-at $33 well under the dumb fondue place and legit "fine dining"
9. Chilapan
...
...
6,322,901. Geja's

Step 1: My wife said she wanted to go.33anda3rd wrote: I'm wondering if you could walk us through the steps that took jim, who loves refreshing beer, authentic and good Mexican food, and chain seafood, and hates Chicago, to Geja's, which is by all accounts an outdated, overpriced, non-chain-seafood, non-Mexican, city of Chicago date spot usually occupied only by people whose friends have no taste and tell them "you'd love it, it's like real romantic and you can dip bread in cheese and meat in oil and it's like real fun and romantic and have him take you there."
Step 2: There are no more steps.
By the way thirds - there is a pizza joint out near where I work in the burbs. You should totally come out here and try it.

What's it called? I'm supposed to go out to Penrose in Geneva and SOB in Naperville next week. Near one of those?

But you are in luck - they have one in Geneva too. Right by the Ace Hardware.

You should go get some pizza at Papa S. Michael. You will lose your appetite quickly.

Does St. Louis style call for lots of beard hair? If so then yes they do!

Went to kind of new restaurant-bar/lounge Element located in renovated old city hospital complex. Enjoyed it.
the rehab looks great. Don't know why restaurants have these goofy names, but oh well. will go back in better weather for the rooftop terrace.

I went to Qdoba yesterday and forgot how weird their burritos are. The tortillas are kind of disgusting. First off no corn, I need my corn tortilla. Second off, it's sticky and gummy. Chipolte is the same. Not a fan of those two places but they seem to be very popular. It's a fast food place that sticks it's nose up at fast food places.
But flour tortillas are not the way to go ever. Corn or bust.
